Best way to defend an attack?

I have no problems scoring goals against normal level team (except when they use an extremely defensive system and hold me to a frustrating 0-0 draw), but whenever the computer attacks me I can never seem to defend properly and leave huge gaps in my defence

the computer seems to be able to just take the ball off me with just one touch, but when I tackle them, they sidestep/pass/turn away, anything that stops me from getting the ball, I've tried 4 different approachs and none seem too effective (Slide Tackling, 2 man pressure, 1 man pressure, running into the player).

Any ideas?

Firstly I recommend you do the challenge training, maybe through that you will identify the main problem with defending. It could be any of four things;

1) the team you play as (Does it have a poor defence?)

2) your formation settings

3) your own general ability to defend

4) Your familiarity with the radar

If you haven't already done so, become familiar and use the radar and glance to see what defensive options you have available whilst you're under attack, doing this will let you know whether to commit a challenge or whether to contain them....This may actually eliminate the hole problem altogether. The more you do this the better you'll get at defending, the radar is very important. But definately train first and try to determine what the main cause is, it may well be a mixture of those four things I listed, and not just one of them alone. I Hope this helps, good luck.

I try and force them to the corners.

What I tend to do is what real defenders do is to shepherd the player out of position. If they are running at you, try and get your player in front of them and a little towards the inside. This will encourage the player to go past you to the outside and then try and keep him out to the side by standing / running in his passing lane/ running lane. This will allow time for your other defenders to get back into position and most likely force him to cross rather than just run straight at your keeper. It takes a while to do correctly but if you have a fast defender with good balance it can be quite effective.

I have waited for 20mintues (in-game) for the opponent to make a mistkae once, I just followed them everywhere and before I could apply pressure or slide they passed it, now that was annoying as I needed to score a goal :tongue:

My usual method is to dive in for tackles with my midfielders, slide tackles or block tackles dependant on the situation. I then sit back and let the man come to my defenders - this makes it difficult for most average players to get in behind the defence, and allows the exposed midfielders to get back and help. I also ride my luck a hell of a lot and rely on my keeper - James in the ML and Julio Cesar against the lads.

I just try to direct the attacking team out wide, because I know I'm shit defending down the centre. If the team is moving in, I move players inwards in the hope that the attacker will have nowhere to go apart from out wide. Then, when the attacker is running down the wing, I just have 2 players chasing him down and try to either force him off the pitch, or block any crossing attempts.
