I use a ps2 controller on the PC.

With PES5 all I had to do was a little 'shimmy' with the left analogue stick to do a side step and beat my opponent.

With PES6 now i have to 'hold R2 and operate the analogue stick' at the same time, am I doing something wrong or is this just a forced change that has been implemented in PES6??

It's global well known, that the PS2/XBOX (and generally ALL GAME-PAD users!) have TOTALY control of EVERYTHING you can in PES series!
A PC user using keyboard and CAN'T get use to it the game-pad (like me), he has ONLY the 20% of ALL the moves he can do!
Even if the PES6 IMPROVED a lot many drippling thinks, WITHOUT game-pad you CAN'T make much things...
I bought one game-pad, but STILL can't use to it...

...And to answer your question... ;)

Yeah, the dribbling is changed from PES5 (now in PES4 style). You need to hold R2 to perform the sidestep that was automatically done in PES5. Only pressing to the side now makes the player turn in that direction instead of sidestepping.

That's not true... with the keyboard you can do almost everything you do with a gamepad. The only thing that i know it can't be done are manual direction passes.
