I've played about 45 games online now - and had around 25 lost connections! Many of them in the last 5 minutes when I have been winning.
Now, before i think there is a conspiracy afoot...

I'm on Telewest broadband / using Netgear router with port 5730 forwarded...plus a netgear gaming adapter

Is anyone having similar lost connection problems ?

I haven't suffered it myself, but others have mentioned their opponants disconnecting while the opponants are losing.

Pretty sad if you ask me. But I don't know if your problem would be because of this or your connection, your broadband thingy doesnt sound like it would cause problems.

Does your connection ever cut off when you're on the internet or anything?

(We're talking about PS2 right?)

Internet connection is always stable. I use a VPN for work and that has never been disconnected.

If you have 25 disconnects in 45 games you have serious problems. Probably your router isn't set up correctly. Try plugging the modem directly into the ps2 and see if you have any disconnects.
