Controller worries

Hey. Was wondering if any of you who has played the demo could shed light on the control issue of pes 3. Bummed out in resent occurences of the dreaded analog control in sports games I'm dreading a similar turn of events in the best sports game ever namely the pes series. Was hoping a kind soul would put end to my worries in advance of the game being released. If pes goes analog I for one won't bother to buy it. Thanks in advance

Mate I had the same worries, Cant stand them damn sticks!

As far as I've heard its gonna be the same as PES2 controls, you can still use the d-pad and play like a happy bunny, however to do that Zidane spin and other little skills you need to use the right hand stick,
Also I've read a mag review that suggests if you use the sticks then you can move in more than 8 directions, curve your runs etc....
I've learnt enough to not worry anymore, but time will tell!

I heard the game is designed for the analogue control sticks to give a more fluid run. I say it is too...as long as you dont have to use that ridiculous manual pass button which sucks beyond belief, im a happy bunny....

yeah thats my biggest worry as well, never liked the stick! although ive been trying to play the demo with it, i think with time i MIGHT get used to it. would like to know what those who own the beta copy play with, stick or d-pad?

You can use both the d-pad or stick. I've always used the dpad in the beta and previous PES/WE games.

The right stick i use a fair bit for tricks etc, although i dont use the manual pass as much now (its a bit more difficult now due to you having to press the stick down than in previous PES games)

Happy camper

That is the best news I could get. Thanks a bunch to the lot of you that provided the jolly news about the control issue. And for making me a happy camper that won't have to lose sleep counting the seconds till pes 3 is released.

Cheers and happy pes gaming!!

I prefer the manual pass option, you can more or less pass the ball in any direction you want, which enables me to split defences, however PES3 requires a little more thought, and practice. Changing the controls was a bad move in my opinion, they have taken 1 step forward, and 1 to the side with this version. As anyone else noticed the lack of control you have, for e.g. I was defending a cross from the left to the back post, my defender got up to head it, but instead of heading the way I was pointing on my pad he headed it across the goal to a defender who was free. This type of thing happens all the time, if you try a flick on in to space the ball will just go to the nearest man instead, or to the keeper. I think they are trying to enforce action and make the game more arcade like than simulation as it was before. they should build in an option that gives you total control, I know there is the manual option but that doesn't do much, it still swaps players without you pressing L1, it still boots the ball out of defence when you want to pass it out, it still has control!!! I want to play the game and not watch one, I am sure all you guys are good players and more than have the ability to pass a ball etc yet the CPU judges weight and direction more or less, not good for me.

My guess is that people who like the manual pass will get used to it in time. It does seem a better method where you have to press a button to pass it - plus this leaves the stick free for all the skill moves. Not really much else they could have done with this.

Not sure what button you use for clearing headers. X is always a pass header in the direction you choose. I use [] to make clearances. A couple of times in WE7 and PES3, I've made a powerful clearing header only for once Beckham and once Zidane to volley it into the goal from over 25m out!

I have no problems passing the ball out of defence. You just have to make sure there is a player to receive it.
You can use the manual air pass to make a high pass out of defence if you wish. [] to boot it clear and O can sometimes be controllable and sometimes just a clearance too. Again, the manual method can solve this.
May be best to try the new system out for 2 or 3 weeks and then report back to let us know what we think of it.

red, I had the exact same problems with you in terms of clearance headers when I first got WE7 and I detested it. It's very annoying, I know from experience. There is a solution, however (mind me for sounding like an advertisement). It's all about timing. Just like in real football, only make the defender jump as late as possible so he can get a powerful header away. It usually gets the ball far away from any opposition in the box or anyone gearing up for a volley. And if the cross into the box is coming very close to the goal don't hesitate to use X to pass it to a teammate in free space who can then, subsequently, clear it.

All it takes is a little bit of practice in training and/or some exhibition matches and you'll rarely have the problem again.

The same rule applies to shooting headers. Try to press (and hold) the [] just as the ball reaches your player's head.

anyways red, whos to say the computer player didnt nudge your player to make a bad header? makes it more skilful if you ask me.

Thanks for the tips, and if was a nudge, and the incident described wasn't caused by a nudge, it would make it more realistic. I did hope that it was due to the form and that passes etc would therefore be somewhat erratic, but I guess I will have to see when I get the full version.

I do want the game to be skilful, in fact reliant on skill, but it doesn't seem to be, you don't have enough control of the ball for that to be the case. It seems like it is only me that wants this, or maybe I am missing something here, I will accept if I am not timing headers correctly then I am at fault and need to practice a little more, but for passing it is still the CPU that choses the weight of the pass, that is not skill, thats just pressing a button.

Anyway, I still can not wait for the game to come out and will be spending many hours honing my skills, in prep for the online capabilities in pes4(?) there are some guys who need to put there thumbs where there mouths are. but I haven't got nothing but love for you guys!!!

red, ive noticed the way you like everything you do in the game to be dependent on you and you alone.
well, i know where youre coming from, but this aint the way games work. for example, in the demo, when you make a long pass, the direction is dictated by both you and the computer, but mostly you. this is as it should be imho. i dont mind that if its obvious who im passing to and i press in right direction with roughly enough power, that the ball would go to the player i want. that would be my preference. the skill is in picking out the pass for me. (with a bit of skill in the execution also)
