Good morning guys. PES2009 is being sold for all consoles here in Cyprus since Saturday! I found out just yesterday and I got mine for 65 euros. That's expensive but I couldn't wait any longer and I wasn't risking buying it online.
First Impressions
--------------------
1)Transfers
The transfers are out of date. In fact only a few are up to date.
For example Berbatov is still at Tottenham, Traore-Hoyte-Senderos at Arsenal, Robinho at Madrid and so on... For 65 euros you would expect more from these cheap lazy b*st*rds at Konami. How can Robbie Keane be at Liverpool and some earlier transfers not completed? You sometimes wonder...
2)Editing mode
You can rename teams, leagues and players. You can download the emblems from the internet and put them on a usb stick and then on the playstation. You can then browse, select them for each team, resize and save.
The same applies for chants. You can choose a chant in mp3 format and save it for your preferred team. How awesome is that!!!
Shirt editing reminds me of the good old days. Lots of shirts to choose from, lots of patterns. You have to experiment to get the stripes and colors right with possibly all shirt combinations doable.
3)Champions League mode
Why bother with a champions league mode when only a part of the teams in the competition are licensed? Arsenal, Chelsea for example cannot be chosen from the "Champions League" menu. Also the Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta is not included in the game. I don't support them btw but I sympathize with their fans for wanting their team in the game. Cluj is in the game for Gods sake!!
4)Teams-Licenses
Liverpool and Man U are the only teams licensed from the England League.
I think the French, Italian and Dutch leagues are completely licensed. I have to double-check.
No German league. There is an extra league with enough empty slots in which it can be created.
Spanish league is half licensed. The non-licensed teams can be edited.
5)Gameplay
I really liked the gameplay. Lots of passing, a good ratio of scoring per game, lots of running especially with players like Messi, Ronaldo and Robinho who seem unstoppable. Dribbling needs a few games to get used to but when it clicks you can see that it is as easy as in any of the previous PES versions.
Scoring is easy but I need to get my accuracy sorted and understand the weight of the ball. We played like 10 games last night and scored in almost every possible way (besides an overhead kick
).
I also conceded lots of goals. Defending is similar to other pro evos with the quality attackers still having an advantage to defenders. Monster defenders like Rio Ferdinand though can bully anyone to submission.
6)A few mistakes
a)REF
---
Refereeing is questionable at times. I found myself screaming when I got penalized for perfectly good challenges which resulted even in yellow cards. There are times you can clearly see the defender touching the ball but the referee still blows for a foul. Also sometimes the referee stops the flow of the game in cases that is easy to play the advantage.
b)Set Pieces
-----------
I found myself puzzled when I saw Van Persie missing a penalty with the ball neatly rebounding at his feet but instead of blasting the ball to the net he just stood there rooted on the ground.
This "freezing" happens very often. After a player takes the kick he just pauses on the spot. Another embarrassing situation of this same case was Fabregas taking a free kick which bounced against the wall but couldn't move to regain possesion with the ball rolling next to him.
7)Graphics
---------
I wouldn't say vastly improved but surely better than last years. The pitch is smoother and the stadiums more detailed with the annoying lag belonging to the past. New animations are there. I noticed though that the graphics seem a bit "dark" in closeups.
Player faces are in most cases spot on but varying in numbers from team to team. For example Lazio fans are going to be slightly disappointed as only a few players had their faces created. Hairstyles are outdated with a number of players in need of a haircut.
8) CONCLUSION
------------------------
An improvement over last years game. The lag is gone, the graphics are better , the editing is there, the gameplay is different. I recommend it to anyone and especially to the jokers that still play FIFA. A must have!
