Defending? In 3 easy steps?

In three easy steps?

1. Do not give the ball anyway in tight positions. Retain possession as much as possible in the back and feed it to your midfielders. If the opposition forces you into the corner, either attempt to pass back to the goalkeeper if there is sufficient space to do this without it being intercepted or pass it out for a throw in (just press the relevant direction and then press the pass button) in order to get all your players back or to space out your players. Try not to run down the wings that are in your own half when you are trying to build an attack. If they tackle you, they are free to goal.

2. Manually move your player in front of theirs when the ball comes in from a cross. This may help to head the ball out of the box. If the ball seems to be coming into the 6 yard box press triangle to bring the goalkeeper out. This is risky so make sure you practise in non-important matches. Do not always do this - judge the cross as best as possible.

3. Use the function to bring a second player up to help close down the opposition player with the ball. Press R1 and square to do this (RT and X on xbox i think, not sure). As long as you keep holding this, your friendly player can move towards the opposition whilst you can manually position yourself to intercept a potential cross.

Hope this helps.

i would like to add the following to defence tactics

i find playing with a defensive midfeilder to sit in front of the back 4 even without marking any players as a big help as this allows the DM to attack the player with the ball keeping the defensive line in posistion IE no spaces for opposistion players to advance into ,altho this does not nullify the opposistion attack it restricts it ,the mere presence of a defender usually makes an attacker go backwards

using the square button(team mate pressure) when opposistion has the ball ,in their half ,do not use,it wears down stamina of your players and also pulls your players out of posistion ,leaving holes for the oppisistion to pass to ,i find if they are playing across the back 4 ,use your foreward(s) to either pressure their player into passing while using the other to anticipate the next pass therefore making the oppisistion rush their passing

when in central midfeild if playing with a 4-4-2 with a DM use your CM or AM to go to the player with the ball if he is behind the player press square this will bring him goal side quicker than if he was playing to your tactics then controlling your DM use him and posistion in front of your back 4 blocking the pass in between your centre halves then when your other midfeilder is close push the DM your controlling foreward to make the tackle usually the combination of the 2 wins the ball ,if however the attacker sees this and turns and knocks it back ,depress the square and allow your players to return to their positions saving stamina and also denying space

when they attack down the wing : if playing 4-4-2 and your wide midfeilder is in view press the square and he will run back to assist your full back ,if your DM is in view and not your wide midfeild he will go ,but this pulls him out of position altho your wide midfeilders will try to fill his position vacated ,he takes too long to get their ,if their is no midfeilders in view your CB will go to assist but like above this pulls them out of position ,if the latter occurs i find it best to use the full back to pressure (use him as the square controlled) while posistioning the CB (player controlled) to either (A) mark any foreward free or making a run into the box and denying the pass ,or (B) ready to intercept or pressure the attacking foreward with the ball should he beat my full back

also i would like to point out defensive basics like when you anticipate the oppisition is going to pass from full back to wing down the line its best to pressure the ball player with the square while manually operating your full back (using radar if cant be visually seen) to its potential destination preferably goal side

break up play ,one way of doing this is using basic tactics and flood the midfeild with players ,altho its effective it limits your attacking options ,it is very usefull when your players are low on stamina ,it doesnt let you play to your full potential ,the way around this is to play your defensive line high as tactic A,this moves your defence closer to your midfeild making it hard to dribble through and ultimately denys time and space to make passes and limiting their attacking options
also consider your first team movements ,if they play a ball accross the floor your joypad movement should be foreward to attack the intended opposition player who will recive the ball ,if hes facing towards your goal you must make a tackle otherwise he could spring through your defensive trap ,if hes facing in any other direction pressure the player this means he cannot turn and play an attacking ball ,if the opposistion plays an aerial ball your first joypad movement should be backwards this will help your defence to either get to head the ball to saftey or get bodies back to help defend adequetley

whats worth of note when defending is concentration ,try not to worry to much where the ball may be played but concentrating in the 10 yards where the attacking player with the ball is ,if you keep to the above tactics ,you will be tough to break down

finally outballs ,we all need a good outball to relive the pressure or even set up our own counter attacks ,using the 4-4-2 i find when winning the ball in deep full back areas send an aerial diagnol ball(not square accross the back 4) to the oppisotte wing usually finds your wide midfeilder in lots of space unless man marked

happy defending

1. keep formation shape as much as possible
ex. if you are caught off guard on the wing and you have only once center back to cover don't chase the winger unless you know you can stop him. the computer percentage of scoring when individual players are out of position are much higher.

2. don't tackle until opponent is in your defending third unless the opponent leaves a clear opening
*may times the opposing player will lose the ball themselves by making a bad pass or a driblling mistake. dont give the opposition and chance to exploit your defense with bad tackling. position your player close enough that they cant shoot or break away.
ex. if player is in the middle third of the pitch, check angles of passes and move your player so that your force the opponent to go a certain way
ex2. if you are in your defending third, position your player closer and check the shooting angles of your opponent. try to block any clear shooting lanes

3. No monkey business. Play simple in the back, don't give away free kicks (the cpu is amazing with them) or corners which usually means a goal. simply clear the ball forward if you have to and reorganize your defense
