defending in top class

please help. okay this is my basic defending but i need a bit more help. i basically press L1 when i am not in possesion until a player im controlling is facing the opponent with the ball. then i control him while pressing my team mate pressure button (shoot button) so then i have in effect 2 players trying 2 get the ball of the opponent. i also keep an eye out for opponent attacks down the wings so i tend to keep my wing backs covered just incase. now this works fairly well, but i let some seeeeriosly lame through balls cut through my defence and its always the player im controllings fault. so all im asking, because im crap at this, when is the best time to press the tackle button, cos i get it sooo wrong and it always means drawing a match for me. also whens the best time to press header button defending a corner, now from my experience the first button to press is L1 so you're defending with the best player and then i just bash the header button. any tips cos i often leak goals this way too.:erm:

Sorry, mate, but there's more to it than pressing the tackle button. You need to sort out a defensive 'shape' [see Advanced Formations threads for more info, particularly the first post on changing formations mid-game].

How many defenders do you play?

Would you rather strikers went 'inside' towards your CBs, or 'outside', to the flanks and the SBs?

How many DMFs do you have? Where are they/what are they doing when the opponent breaks?

Sorry if this sounds over-complicated, but defence is not all about tackling.
As for set pieces, use R2 to control your guy in the box. Normally you can see where your opponent is aiming.

Simply standing in front of someone can be just as effective....

Nevertheless, being as close to your opponent as possible and intercepting the ball inbetween thier ball-touches is probably the best time. Takes practice and timing. EVen then, Ronaldinho will do you. F*cking Barca/Brazil.

ok, wow man, i was really good at pes3 and 4, never touched 5 and 6 because i was locked up, lol. but anyway, i play arsenal mostly, 4-4-2 with either flamini or gilberto as dmf. i would prefer strikers to attack my sbs or outside. and i havent really noticed as much what my dmfs are doing when opponnents break, i think generally acting as another defender. so use r2 to move around in the box? ill try that out. thanks for the reply btw.

Mate, if you've been locked up, you're as good as you say are....hope the tips are useful. I'm sure some better players will be along shortly.

yeh tips r gud mate, ive pretty much sorted my defending out, im just a bit more susceptible to long rangers now and im still really struglling with defending corners. any more tips about corners? ive tried this r2 thing and i dont really notice much control, suppose i'll pick it up in time? thanks anyways.

Well, I may not be 100% accurate with the R2 thing; it might be R1+R2. One of them is Super Cancel [which deserves a thread of it's own] and the other is 'control player while ball is airborne', which is what I was trying to tell you about. Sorry!

I really thought some other people who come along, but judging from my games online it's not surprising people aren't full of ideas about defensive strategies...

All the best, man.

Best tip for corners it to get control of a defender - a free one preferably (you have to be quick), then move them in line with the near post, just on the 6 yard line. The AI tends to put it's corners in the same place virtually evey time.

kk, yeh i think ive got some sort of idea about defending corners now. in the last few games, just as youve said (ficklered) ive got a free player to stand near post few yards out so im pretty much infront of most players. seems to work quite well. so thanks for that! just need to practise more now, lol, i thought i was getting quite solid defensively in open play but last few games thats where ive been shit, lol. it'll come together hopefully. thanks all....

hi again people. can some people reply, only 2 people have been helping so far. i mean how long does a reply take? 1 minute? anyway, i just want to know, (only top class) do most of you lot defend with calling in a 2nd player to help or do most of you hardly ever use it?

Its useful to use in order to close down the opposition player. I use it when the opposition is running down the flanks and stops at the corner flag, blocks and surrounds him.

Use it when the computer cannot find a player to pass to. Helps to close in the space and surround the player but be aware of long balls over your defenders.

I never use it, but i do fall in the same pit falls as you with through balls, my defence sometimes is shocking. Pisses me right off, when im winning one nill and they cripple at the back yet again.

Think its just about jiggling your formations and tactics. Dont go diving in, cuz they will skin you alive, just hang back, watch runs, watch your players. Its great gaming really. but highly highly frustrating.!!

I use the conrer tips, mentioned earlier. But defending is the hardest part of the game this time, which is a good thing, so dont feel to down hearted.

I think i will get through a few control pads before the year is out.

yep, i just got my worse beating ever, 6-1 from barca looool. feels shit when u lose like that man. they scored from all of their shots on goal and that was it. and i had 7 shots and scored 1 lol. how do u know when u need a new gamepad? i hope i master this man, its nice being at a level when u can just play ur own game at ut own pace, at ur own style and do tricks and flicks when u like but only in top class man. i have never tried the lower levels because it feels embarrassing or sumthing? good question - how many people here, have mastered everything in top class mode but started off by playing at a lower difficulty level? because i went straight in top and havent looked back but havent really progressed much...

Me too geezer.

I tried the formation stragety in game change option thing last night and it works really well. Also i uded to two man pressing (by pressing the shoot button) and that works a treat too. I one 6 in a row, then the mrs came home ;0)

I meant i used to through my control pad alot and break the fooker.

I go to anger management classes now so they might last abit longer.

Quick tip on calling in extra defender... can help prevent the dreaded cut back.

If opposition player is breaking down wing, use call extra defender button to get the AI to track the winger, but do not challenge with the player you are in control of. Instead, move your player into the 18 yard box to try and prevent the easy ball/cross to a striker (works best on Wide camera).

If anything , the AI player trying to prevent the run/cross will have more sucess against a skillful winger & they are less likely to draw a foul.

yes im shit. i just lost 4-2 2 manure. why am i shit man??? 1 way or another i get shitted on, its not fair.

You have to be very patient on the ball. Use the map alot! Look for gaps, especially down the wings, if not cut inside. If you cant seem to get out of your half, just keep the ball, let them chase it, use your keeper if you have to.

Lots of ways to avoid pressure in games. Just takes alot of concentration.

I was really stuggling with corners aswell.I started a new season last night and i havnt conceded a goal yet.
I play 3-5-2 with richards, stam ,maldini so i presume the extra height in my defence sorted it.

i dont think my main concern is attacking, i am fairly adequate for top class in that department. its just defending, its sooo frustrating sumtimes. 2 ficklerd - u know when u say to call a 2nd player to chase someone breaking down my wing and use the player im using to follow anyone in the box? at what point do u decide to call a 2nd defender in to follow the winger? is it like as soon as it looks likely thats the ai's plan or what??? sorry if im bitching but this game makes me bitch... i hate bitches aswell. no faiiiiir man.
