Defending Tips

Hey guys, i am having trouble defending in the game, playing on top player.

My players never seem to properly challenge (sometimes they don't even challenge at all) for the ball when i press the x button in front or near the attacker.

Needless to say that this has led to many, many, many, many, many, many needlessly conceded goals and it is starting to annoy me.

Anyone have any tips on how to defend in general?

Try using the square button to call in another defender. I'm not really sure if the X button works for tackling, at least not for me. I have more luck waiting to get close to the attacker and then trying to take the ball off his foot or slide in front when he knocks the ball too far forward.

Good luck

I've tried using the square as well, but it doesn't seem to help much, the attackers just manage to run through my players anyway.

Also is it good to man mark?, or to just leave the normal zone marking, this seems to change a lot in every pes game, in some versions it's very effective an in others it makes it very easy for the cpu to drag your df's out of position.

And lastly, why in the blue hell do defenders respond so slowly and run out of position so often? Is there any way to keep them in place?

That's a tough one, if you man-mark you run the risk of getting pulled out of position. You may be able to man-mark with one defender, as long as you have a sweeper covering your last line of defense.

I wish I knew why the defense is so jacked up. I've got players standing watching as an attacker dribbles right past them or they turn and run cover a winger. Maybe you could try adding an attcking arrow towards your goal. Don't know if that makes sense

Last night I learned how to defend a lot better. Instead of sprinting and being agressive when 1 on 1 with an attacked, I play conservative. I don't use the sprint button, just conservatively try to contain him. There are only certain conditions when the tackle is effective, and you have to learn to see those moments and take advantage of them. Just learn when you have the highest percentage of winning a tackle, and make the move in that situation. When he makes a mistake or something. A lot of the times you don't have to use the tackle button, you can just pick up the ball. Those are the least risky tackles and can always be successfully made when the attacker makes a mistake. Anyways, you don't have to always tackle him, sometimes just containing him is enough to stop the attack from creating a good opportunity.

Use the square and x buttons. Then try to keep in parallel to him, sometimes the AI take the ball for you, if you, try to learn tackling.

I very rarely use the square button. X doesn't seem to work at all. I just get in the right position and slide tackle (but that only works if your player is fast enough to catch the oppsoing player lol).

For me just set backine defense to C and set the offside priority to A...and the result quite good....

The square button works really well. The AI pressures and you can keep in fron of the player with the ball, so he won't go any further.

This works the best for me, defending is a bit more manageable now. The AI still scores craps loads of goals, but i'm chokking that up to the stupidity of defender movement and the insaneness of Inter Milan's attack.:realmad:

I tend to drop off the CPU player that has the ball and wait for the right opportunuty to jump in. I also find that I use my midfielders and strikers to pressure the opposition. To be honest I do this because if the CPU gets too near my defenders or goalkeeper (aka Laurel & Hardy) anything can happen!
