Defensive Star Skills

Back and to the left.
Is there any ideal way to position your defence to maximise the defenders star skills? For example, should someone with * D-Line Control in a 3 man defence be centrally positioned with say 2 * Marking defenders flanking him? Or with a 4 man defence should the D-Line guy be positioned back slightly so he is the last man at the back? Or does it really matter? And lastly why do defenders like Jap Stam take mad notions to run upfield and play a 'reverse-offside trap' leaving the attacker 1-on-1 with the keeper?

The Jaap Stam case could be because Lazio often play him as a full-back.

Your suggestion for the 3-man defence seems pretty sound, it's what I'd do myself and is the logical way of it.

In a flat back four, I think it depends on what system you play. If you're playing an offside trap, I think a D-Line Control defender would be better slightly forward as he'd make the line move to his position (well, that's the impression I get from Konami's description).

If you're simply looking to keep the defence working as a unit, without playing a particular offside trap, I think leaving him in line with the other centre-back would work better.
