Directional Button or Left Analogue Stick?

Hey people 5th year playing PES, just wondered what people's opinions are regarding whether to use the directional buttons or the left analogue stick during games? Which is better?

I think the new skill format is easier with the analogue but I've used the directional buttons since I could remember...Putting spin on the ball for freekicks seems a bit different with the analogue? Anyone else notice this? Is there actually a way you can put more curl/spin/dip on shots? Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't? Obviously the R2 shot has a little bend but what about 30 yard strikes?

I played the Fifa 2009 a few weeks ago - freekicks are awesome...the dip you can put on corners and freekicks is different class - something i'd love to be able to do with my beloved PES, unless you already can?

D-Pad.

FIFA's freekicks are still bordering on Sensi levels (Assuming you're old enough to understand). Only a handful of players in the world can bend a ball as well as the average players on FIFA.

Haha that's hilarious...listen to yourself smuggin' it off. I know what you mean. You're answer is based on realism...something people need to get over - it's a game.

Smuggin' it off? Sorry mate, not even sure what that means.

If I wanted to play a pure arcade version I'd be using Mario's on the Wii. Personally I prefer a touch of realism. I don't see the fun in being able to score sweeping freekicks with just any old muppet. Just my preference if that's okay.

Nothing wrong with that at all...I'm just saying, the only thing realistic, in effect, is not to expect realsim because essentially, it's a game - realism and game are completely contradictory of one another. 'Smuggin'...hmm never mind...

Having played football at a competitive level (until injury put pay) I am well aware that PES is not 'real'. I do however feel 30 yard super banana shots by league 2 defenders is beyond the reals of common sense.

For your benefit I shall re quote from my previous post:

To bring us back on topic:

As from day 1 (NES, SNES etc etc. ) I have been using a D pad (Directional buttons)

Playing PES on my PC, a couple of weeks ago I bought myself a XBOX controller for windows. I just can't seem to get used to it. It's very hard for me to do the tricks with the analogue stick compared to the directional buttons. Because of that, I still play PES with a PS2 controller connected to an USB converter. Works perfect ;)

Can't beat the sony pad for footy games. I'm so glad they didn't change it for the PS3 as was first feared.

I think, Fick, if you are saying you can score 30 yard wonder goals with anyone on FIFA, then that's a bit exaggerated, it's a lot harder to score from range than it is on PES. Unless you mean from free kicks, in which case I dont remember trying many free kicks on FIFA, so you may be right.

Anyway, to answer the orignal post, I used to use the D-Pad all the time (much to the amusement of my mate, despite the fact I beat him 8/10 times) but then I played Euro 2008, and of course on that it automatically sets you up to use the stick, with the pad being used for tactics, so I tried it, and I've just seemed to have picked it up.

Just free kicks.

After playing FIFA 09 on the stick I found it too vauge for general play for my liking and spend many an hour cursing the lack of a d-pad option. I guess having always used D-pad (I even used a pad on my old Amiga rather than a joystick for football games) I just find it difficult to adjust.

Think I used to use the D-Pad, but I changed as I found it easier to use the left analog stick.

You can set it on Fifa so you use the D-pad. I've done it, in fact i've set the controls to match Pro Evo's. I got Pro Evo yeasterday by the way. Was wetting myself with excitement, singing a song to myself as i ran into my flat to bang it on. Very disappointed thus far. I'm going to keep giving it time, but i hate the way your midfielders don't come close to give you an option, instead plonking themselves next to the nearest opposition player. And when you do a give a go, the player who makes the run sacks it off after running a few yards. The AI all round is slightly disturbing.
