Disc Read Error w/ DVD-Rom?!?

I have a North American PS2.

With some newer DVD movies, and now with my Winning Eleven 6:International ps2 game... I have had problems. When loading game or movie, I usually start system first then insert disc and go to browser option, and start from there. Problem is, I keep getting a "Disc Read Error" with these. Sometimes I can get the things to load, after repeatedly opening and closing tray. For instance, it takes me about 30-45 minutes sometimes to load WE6:I. Today I wasted about an hour and it still didn't work.

I'm clueless as to why this happens. Seemingly only to certain DVD-rom games and movies.

Can anyone help?

ps - i own other games and they work fine, such as Fifa '04. But obviously I don't really care about playing it, anymore.

Thanx in Advance,
Rob

DREs, unfortunately, are common in Sony's machines and the best way to eradicate this problem is to go in manually and clean your lens and any surrounding dust.

It may seem complicated, dut don't fear, it isn't. They're some very handy guides on sites such as GameFAQs that are very thorough and simple to follow. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

thats bullshit. the same thing happened to my ps2 so i got my dad to clean the lens but it did'nt help.
there was something once on watchdog about the ps2 messing up after a year so you've got to pay to get it fixed.

Err, no it's not 'bullshit' because the method has worked for numerous people (including me). Of course, they'll be the odd exception, in this case it was you. Tough luck.

Yea, the problem is bullshit, but thankfully I found a guide to fixing it... its an archived artivle on techtv.com. I not only cleaned the lens with isopropyl rubbing alcohol, but I also tweaked the white gear which sets the distance between laser and disc.

It wasn't as hard to open and mess around as I thought, and it with a minor adjustment it works as good as day I bought it. No more 'DRE' and the games load so fast, I dont even have to go to system browser anymore.

Thanx for all the info guys, very helpful. Now I'm currently preaching the gospel to my friends with same problem. Maybe make a quick tenner w/ each system I fix.

p.s. - I bought Winning Eleven 6:International off amazon.com
