DIY Defending

I say this as a general statement and understand that this will not apply to the players with some degree of integrity.

Why don't you want to defend? Defending can be a really enjoyable aspect of the game but yet you continuously hold onto those buttons until you win the ball back like your life depended on it.

I play my football as authentically as possible and I will continue to take a hammering online because I actually want to PLAY the game. I can see no merit in allowing the AI to do ALL of your defending for you by clinging to a couple of buttons, show some skill and actually defend for YOURSELVES.

I mean, I don't understand you when you say defend for yourself.
People are complaining about defending because every player does a through ball which your cb runs away from, or some guy can beat 3 players even if he has a crap rating. It's nothing about doing it yourself or letting the cpu do it

Ok, now I'm new to this forum and the game but in the short time I've been here I've heard several references to Holding R2+Square+X as a method of defending. Subsequently, I have tried this method and it's evident that to a large degree this works well, albeit with a hollow sense of achievement when successful.

My point is that I see this method employed during most of my online matches with only a few exceptions trying to defend in a realistic manner. For example, I will use my player to mark-up or intercept passes whilst using Square to make the AI pressure my opponent at the right time, ensuring my players aren't pulled out of position.

I refuse to just blindly hold onto several buttons and watch my entire team chase the ball around like a bunch of 5 year olds in the playground.

I know I'm flogging a dead horse with this one because I'm aware that people have a 'win at all costs' attitude and I don't expect many to understand such integrity to be aligned with a video game, so my point is to single out that the people who employ such techniques are not necessarily as skilled as they may appear.

Your point isn't very clear- you say that people should defend for themselves, but R2 + SQUARE + X makes the computer position your defender so it's not really defending by yourself, is it?

I think he has got a good point abu, i personally agree that when defending its mainly clinging to a few buttons and hope its enough to fend off the attack, theres alot more variety in attack obviously, but i try to defend like he said, not really in control compared to attacking

You could defend similar to that in PES 2010 and 2011, e.g, you'd hold (X) and (Square) and if your team was good enough you'd eventually win the ball back.

I don't find it that way in 2012 as doing this will result in a foul, holding the jockey button as well as this will only result in you holding up play which can easily be passed around especially online.

If ppl are doing this online to defend, switch play from left to right, and I mean long ball switch as most of there defenders are pushed to the side of the pitch to your player with the ball.

This kind on defending is amateurish at best and can easily be, not only answered but used to your advantage.

^ Yeah now i actually defend much like in previous versions of pes and it works much better than holding R2+X constantly. (superstar difficulty)

Apologies, After reading back my post I agree it doesn't seem clear what I'm trying to say.

To clarify your point above, I am not a fan of using R2 + Square + X and is the crux of my point, I do not use this method to defend.

I am glad to hear that there are others who do not employ this technique and are still successful within the game, It indicates to me that I just need more practice and can continue defending the way I do.

Thanks for the advice gents, I'll have a go at switching the play to exploit the gaps
