EA nets FIFA license extension
International soccer organization in cahoots with publisher through 2014; deal covers sim, manager, fantasy games.

Fans of Electronic Arts' FIFA series got some good news today. Likewise, those who aren't fans are probably crying foul and squirming on the floor clutching their ankles and shins.

The game publishing giant today has extended its exclusive license with FIFA through 2014, the soccer organization announced today. The deal grants EA the rights to make FIFA-branded soccer games in the sim, manger, and fantasy genres. The agreement covers console games, mobile phone games, and Web-based games.

The marriage between EA and FIFA appears to be going well. The two made their first vows way back in 1993, when EA released FIFA International Soccer for the Genesis. The company expanded the FIFA universe with FIFA Street in 2005. To put things in perspective, by the time this deal is over the two will have enjoyed a 21-year matrimony.

The latest FIFA-branded EA game is 2006 FIFA World Cup, which dribbles into stores this week. Today's deal almost ensures two more World Cup soccer games from EA in 2010 and 2014.

In the sports sector, EA currently has exclusive deals with FIFA, NASCAR, the National Football League, the Arena Football League, NCAA College Football, the PGA, and pro golfer Tiger Woods.

I don't want Konami to do the same at all. This has nothing to do with licenses. All this is saying is that FIFA games will be created by EA. Would you really want Pro Evo games to be called FIFA Evolution Soccer?

ah point taken, I hadn't actually thought of it like that. Surely FIFA should be begging Konami by now. But they obviously aren't which prooves again that they know jack about football

All this and now Konami are trying to stop us patching our copies of PES/WE. Give us a break please.

And how are they going to do that? Surely there is no possible way?

When a respected patchmaker says this there must be something wrong. No patched kits unless theres some way of getting around these problems.

the game was just officially released today...

give them sometime to look through things...

just because it isnt where it always used to be, doesnt mean that they cant find a way to still make patches...

im sure it will just take them time... maybe more time than what they are used to

i dont think this means theey can prevent konami from obtaining the licenses as well. remeber the awful this is football game. it had the fifpro license as well as fifa.

i think the FIFPro is for players only while the FIFA license is for teams, leagues and other related stuff

stupid FIFA! anyways who cares about the license WE owns FIFA games and will keep owning them, its all about the game play! I rather play a West ham united vs Portmouth in WE than playing Brasil vs Argentina in FIFA
