In a 3-5-3, my CF's have one arrow pointing inside, parallel to the defensive line to try to keep them onside. Their other arrows usually dropping deep towards midfield towards the wing.
SMF I usually put to one forward and one inside & forward. My OMF usually has arrows from side to side, hoping to keep him in the gap between the opposition's midfield and defence.
For the DMF/CMF partnership, one has arrows forward, and inside-forward. The other holding player has arrows side-to-side, and Mark Settings to Covering, so he should patrol the area in front of my defence.
With wingers, I position them deeper than the CF with one arrow inside-forward, and the other one backwards down the touch-line, do the link up better with midfield and the full-backs - I find it important to get the full-backs to get forward (inter-passing with the CMF and or DMF) so that he and the winger can get 2 against 1 against the oppositions full-back.
All easier said than done in the heat of battle, but I do try. One other thing I noticed was that when the OMF receives the ball out wide, the winger will generally move infiled, taking up a CF-type position.
