We have just heard a radio broadcast which is believed to be the voice of Bin Laden. It is supposed that he is an Arsenal fan, and so his link with the Gunners....(yes, not the other gunners) is not a surprising one...he had this to say.

"Dear Euro2004 reps, fans, and fellow gooners, I hope all is well, and you guys are having a kick ass tournament, i'm sorry i cant be there in person, as the risk is too great of being caught, but that I'm there in spirit. We have kidnapped the Swiss manager, Jackass, because well...his name says it all. Anyways, we'll release him after the tournament, for now, use the same tactics that were used in the last match. Oh..btw he is unable to speak to you at this moment in time, as he's a little pre-occupied, but I'll try and get him to comment soon, we've even given him a wide screen tv with surround sound speakers and sub woofer to follow the tournament in style....well we made it out of left over missle parts and other bits of US techno weapon stuff...but its all good!!"

Anyways, love and peace you guys there in Europe, and we hope you enjoy the games.......(COME ON ENGERRRRRLAAAAAAAAND!!!!!!) he he......"

Duel Match report

So after the first set of group matches we move back to Group A, with hosts Portugal who are now hanging by a thread now in the comp, needing a miracle to make it out. The Greeks are as good as through with their win, and Russia are fighting Spain for second place.

The Greeks played some amazing football against tradtional underachievers Spain, as they shocked them to a 2-0 win. Charesteas was again his usual self...shooting from distence and making powerful runs. He had a shot early on hit the side net, as he took the game to the Spanish. It was Nikolaidis who opened the scoring with a header, poor marking from Spain. Raul then had a free kick wide. It was Greece who were the most dangerous though, and they made it 2-0 on 33 mins, a great little move with a through ball into Dellas who stayed up for a freekick, managed to get his shot in and score. Again, poor marking from Spain. The Greeks had a strong physical presence, and fought hard for the win, although they had 3 players booked. Worse for Spain was the booking of Xavi, who picked up his second yellow, which means he will miss the crunch match against Portugal.

the second match also threw up a shock as hosts Portugal were beaten by a Sytchev penalty. The offender was Carvalho, who bought down the dangerous Alenichev. Sytchev stepped up to bag the penalty and his second of the tournament. There was a lack of goal mouth action after that, a few half chances for Portugal and barely any for Russia, but they held on for a precious win. This now means that Portugal needs to beat Spain and hope that Greece beat Russia in the final match. Goal difference will also play a part in this.

France 1 vs 2 Croatia
Henry 15
Rapaijic 85
Prso 90 + 2

France start the match with the kick off. Shooting from left to right. 4th minute and France are defending bad as Prso makes a lonf run, but a nice save by Barthez. Henry misses a great chance in the 11th minute, and the goalkeeper kept calm. Trezuget takes a shot 25 yds out and a great save. France are firing shots at will. Cross by Sagnol from the right, and yes henry has scored with a header. France take an early lead within quarter of an hour. Croatia kick off and now are under pressure. Rapaijic, the number 7 takes a 30yd shot but just over the bar. The rest of the first half passes without much happening.

Croatia have come out ready to battle, while France will be wanting to increase the lead. No subs have been made and the 2nd half kicks off. The manager is furious with Rapaijic with taking too many long shots instead of crossing. 47 min, and Rapaijic takes another put at the ball from distane but good save. top marks to Barthez. The corner is taken and it hits the crossbar. It comes of Lizarazu's ahnd, that must clearly be a penalty. No says the referee. Croatia players are begging. The referee wont ahve it and the match continues. Trezuget has been great in the match, he just lets loose a great run, but this is matched excellently by the goalkeeper. Willy Sagnol gets a yellow card for a silly tackle on Prso. The free kcik is well wide. Trezuget sidesteps the Croatian and shoots but blocked well by the goalkeeper. 85 minute and Rapaijic on a run again, going past the first defender and he nets it into the top right. They ahve equalized. 1-1 and the France are now under pressure as the underdogs score.

France kick off and immideatel give away possesion, they must be shaky after that goal. 3 minutes stoppage time to be played. 92 minute and Saha comes on for Trezuget. Rapaijc makes a run down the flank and gets tackled by Sagnol. bad challenge, and look, his second yellow and he's off. France are down to 10 men with a single minute of stoppage time left and Croatia ahve a great place to capitalize with there extra man advantage. Its a free kick from 30m out, taken short to Prso, who makes a run into the centre of the box and punts the ball into the back of the net. GREAT GOAL!!!!!! Croatia take the lead. France are disgusted with themselves. Sagnol must be very gutted.

So Croatia win the match are in first palce in Group B.

Questions.
1. Were my tactics used for this match?
2. Why was Saha brought on?

Well done to the Croats for making the group more interesting.
The Swiss will not have a nice final match ;)

Group B Result

England 1 Owen 59
Switzerland 0 - (Cabanas sent off 42)

This was do or die for England and an edgy second match ended in victory for the English, but it wasn't easy - even after the Swiss had gone a man down before half time. The opening minutes saw Switzerland play a wave of attacks that tested goal keeper, James. One was a shot from Sforza which forced James into a fine save. He kept his nerve stood up well and made a great one handed save, the ball was still in the box, and was brilliantly intercepted by Terry, who managed to get the ball away from Chapuisat who would have had a tap in. England were unable to get any fluency going as the Swiss made some clever plays. But with England adopting a more attacking style, left gaps in the defense, but that was due to the nature of the match, and what defeat meant, this was a match that England had to go for. A bad tackle in the 42nd minute by Cabanas on Ashley cole, saw the midfielder see red from the ref who made sure he punished the swiss player. Cabanas can have no dispute about the sending off, as it was a tackle from behind on aan advancing forward on goal, which could only mean red, due to the now strict regulations.

The second half was now there for the taking with their man advantage, but England weren't playing like a team that had a player up on their opposition. Heskey had come on for the second half and it added some height. He had a chance to score but his first time hit went inches wide from a good pass by Owen. England started getting quite a few shots on goal, many of which were close, but not close enough. The second half also saw Beckham off for Joe Cole, and he then took up Gerrard's position in the offensive midfield role, and Gerrard took up Backham's place on the right wing. And it was his cross that got through to Michael Owen who headed in and got the goal that clinched the match, and ease some pressure on the team. A Joe cole free kick almost doubled the lead, but it was brilliantly saved. A hard fought win for England, they played wel once they settled down a bit and the sending off also helped their cause, but they will need to improve against Croatia if they are to make it out of this very open group, due to Croatia's briiliant win over France.

1. No. I just saw his thread in the Testing section.
2. No.

Interested in seeing the tactics used by France. No worries about the defeat. Not going to appeal or anything. At least it's more interesting now.
