Euro2004- Group B -France V England, Luz - Lisbon

Match 2 Report

France 3 England 1
Trezequet G. Neville 46
24, 50, 77

The Stadium of light was the venue, and France V England was billed as the clash of the tournament. This game produced some of the best football on show so far, and the game wasn't as one sides as the score line suggests. The first 20 minutes were relatively quiet, but the game soon sprung into life after David Trezeguet, headed France in front, from a Robert Pires corner. The ball looped its way to the near post, and fell right on the head of Trezeguet who headed in on 24 minutes to put the French one up. The goal forced England to step up a gear, and a string of chances from Scholes and Rooney showed that England were now in the mood to play football. There was no sign of Long ball that has dogged the England team in major tournaments, and a great passing move ended when Dyer played Beckham in on the right, the England captain drifted in field and let fly a stinging 30 yard shot which tested Barthez, who managed to tip the ball onto the cross bar and see it go over for an England corner. Incidently, it was from the corner that England found a way through. Beckham put in a trademark delivery which found the head of an unlikely scorer in Gary Neville, who had come up for the corner and rose well to beat a french head to the ball and although it weren't the best of headers, Barthez could only palm it into the net on the stroke of half time. With England now level, the game was set up to go either way. Both teams created chances in a very open and attacking game.

England went into the second half with their tails up and threatened some more, until a lapse in concentration from Ashley Cole, allowed Henry to get possession of the ball, and he picked out Trezeguet, who turned and fired the ball into the net. It was the worst time to gift France a goal as that mistake inspired the French to lay siege on the England goal, and soon after the second, they grabbed a third on 77 minutes, again, from a Pires corner and who other than the Juventus man, Trezeguet heading in completing a deserved hatrick. England who fell apart after the second french goal, just couldnt recover, and France could have made it 4-1 when Zidane fired a shot over near the end of the match. For England, it wasn't to be their night, and one could argue that possibly the manager, Lami played the wrong formation, which has been problematic over the past few months, ditching their diamond and playing a flat 4 in midfield. But Lami may revert back to his magical 3-5-2 he used against Sweden in their 3-0 friendly win. But he knows full well that defeat against Switzerland, would spell the end of the road for their 2004 campaign. As for the French, well if they keep putting in performances like this, they will prove hard to beat, but as with football and tournaments like this, one never really knows what team will show up on match day. So a victory for Zidane and co, and a bitter blow for England, the match finished then, 3-1 to France.

Match stats:

France: (4-4-2) Barthez, Silvestre, Thuram, Lizarazu, Sagnol, Viera, Pires, Zidane, Wiltord, Trezeguet, Henry.

England: (4-4-2) James, Terry, Campbell, A. Cole, G. Neville, Gerrard, Scholes, Beckham, Dyer, Owen, Rooney

Euro2004- Group C -Denmark V Italy, D Afonso Henriques - Guimaraes

Wecome to day three of the PES Euro2004 championship. The last two days have seen some cracking matches, most notably the France-England match. But today, it's the turn of the Azzuri who face underdogs Denmark in this opening group C clash. Underdogd they may be, but the Danes are former champions of the European championship in 1992, when a John Jensen winner, won the match for them. So can they get together a good run which could get them into the knockout stages? we'll soon find out, as first they have Italy to beat. Let's run through the lineup, starting with:

Denmark: (3-4-3) Sorensen, Helveg, M. Laursen, Koldrup, Gravesen, Jorgensen, Gronkjaer, C. Jensen, Rommedahl, Sand, Tomasson.

The Danish coach, Gedo has opted to play 3-4-3 in a diamond, which sees Gronkjear and Jorgensen playing left and right int he diamond, hoping to link up with a front three of Rommedahl, Sand, and Tomasson. Graveson of Everton will play the defensive midfield role allowing C.Jensen to break forward. So attacking intent there from the Danes, who will take the game to Italy. But it will be a tough test against some of the worlds best Defenders.

Italy: (4-4-2) Buffon, Nesta, Materazzi, Favalli, Panucci, Gattuso, Zambrotta, Camronesi, Totti, Vieri, Di Vaio.

Worldrec50leagues has also opted to play a diamond, in 4-4-2. The front three of Totti, Vieri and Di Vaio, are going to be a threat, and willt ake some stopping by the Danes. Especially Totti coming in from deep positions. The defence should be strong, with Nesta and Marco Materazzi holding the defensive line. Zambrotta and Camronesi will hope to bereak forward proving they get the space down the wings.

So we go across now, to Portugal for the game.

Report

A super match which saw both teams attack with strength and passion. but the start couldn't have gone any worse for the Danes, as a dubious 3rd minute penalty, conceded by Koldrup after what appeard to be no contact with Vieri who went down, as the Danes protested. Vieri himself then stepped up to take it and scored. The Danes played on the counter most of the match, but were quite useful going forward, as Sand and Rommedahl saw a few headers saved. Totti had a 23rd minute freekick hit the post, the Italian forward was unlucky in not scoring, as it really was a beautiful hit. The second goal did come for the Azzuri after a beautiful move down the right carved out an opening for Di vaio who got on the end of a 3 man move, where Camronesi exchanged passes with Pannuci, who played the ball in to Di Vaio. It wasn't a bad hit from an accute angle, but Sorensen maybe should have done better in stopping the ball going in at his near post.

The Danes fought back hough, and when Sand, played in Rommedahl, who hit an unstoppable strike from outside of the box, with Buffon diving, but well beaten by a moment of class. The danes went in at half time, just a goal down, but confident they can get another.

In the second half Totti, again came close with a header as did Rommedahl, but they couldn't convert their efforts. Denmark for all their trying, had some success in getting through the Italian defence, but did not manage to keep their backline diciplined enough to stop the Italian attack, which was growing in confidence, as they found space through the middle and down the wings, as the Danish defence started pushing deeper into their own half. The gamble of playing 3 at the back and three upfront was not paying off. Posession wise, the Danes matched the Italians, but when it came to the final third of the pitch, it was the Italians who had that killer instinct. The third goal came Vieri hit a great scissors kick which Sorensen couldn't hold and Camronesi knocked the ball in. The goal that finished off the Danes was a Zambrotta header, which sealed victory for the Italians, and putting them off to a flying start in group C.

Some work needed now, for Gedo, who will surely make changes for their next game. But the Italians get off to a deserved win. The match finished then, Denmark 1 Italy 4.

We are just hearing that the Swiss coach, Jackass, has mysteriously disappeard, and cannot be located....a stand in coach will take over managerial duties for the mean time, until we can track him down, but this is worrying for the Swiss team....amd we are also hearing that the game will go ahead. The stand in coach, T1000v2.0, currently working in the insight studio, will make his way to the ground, and take up his temporary role, as well as get back to the studio to cover the highlights after the game. An extraordinary development taking place here....unbelivable.

Well a close friend of T1000v2.0 *cough* *me* *cough* has heard that Jackass' contract has been axed by the Swiss F.A. and so they are now looking for a new manager. THIS IS NOT CONFIRMED, but may be in the next few days.

Euro2004- Group C -Sweden V Bulgaria, Jose Alvalade - Lisbon

Match report

There is only one word to describe this match and that is pulsating. The game of the tournament so far, not only gave us a 6 goal thriller, but produced 2 contenders for goal of the tournament. The Bulgarians began brightly and interchanged passes well, and for the first 20 minutes it was all Bulgaria, and they were the first to get on the score sheet. A decent cross came in from the right wing, which the swedish dfence made a mess of clearing. The ball broke lose and Jankovic was lurking as he smashed the ball into the net, putting Bulgaria in front. The Swedes pressed hard and Larsson was unlucky not to score from close range. A few minutes later Larsson put Ibrahimavic through on goal, but his 20 yard effort flew just over. It remained 1-0 at the end of the half, with Sweden still hanging in there.

As the second half got underway, it was the Swedes who came out fighting, and 2 goals in 2 minutes saw Sweden grab an equiliser only for it to be cancelled out again. It was Freddy Ljunberg who on 58 minutes struck a low shot into the bottm right corner of the net, but on the 60th minute, it was Jankovic who struck with a delightful dribble twisiting and turning defenders and then applying a cool finish past the Swedish keeper. Bulgaria were looking for a win, until the late late show began. A header by defender Lucic, leveled for the Swedes again on the 88th minute, which gave them hope of getting a hard fought draw from the game, which they deserved, but they were stunned a minute later after scoring, It was that man Jankovic who hadn't quite finished. The striker pounced on the half volley scoring from an acrobatic scissors kick which flew into the net...sending the Bulagarian supporters wild, and coach JTHK running down the touchline in amazement and relief, as they scored surely what was the winner on the last minute of normal time. But as cruel as this game can be, The Swedes had one last attack down the right, Larsson crossed, Edman headed back laying it on for Wilhelmson, who scored almost a carbon copy Jankovi's third goal, just 3 mins earlier. Another acrobatic scissors kick which looked spectacular - surely a candidate for goal of the tournament. So that was to be the last kick of the game, honours even and i suppose on the balance of play a fair result. The Bulgarians maybe just deserved the win, but the Swedes never gave up and managed to get a draw from the match. A great game from start to finish, full of incident and exciement, this is European football at it's best, and with the group situation now hotting up, with italy winning 4-1 against Denmark, the second place spot is stil very much up for grabs. So a thrilling group C encounter ending 3-3, and the goals were nothing short of quality.

Match stats:

Sweden: (4-4-2) Isaksson, A. Jakobsson, O. Melberg, Edman, Lucic, Kallstrom, Linderoth, Wilhelmsson, Ljungberg, Larsson, Ibrahimovic.

Bulgaria: (4-3-3) Zdravkov, Pazin, Kirilov, M. Petrov, Peev, M Petkov, S. Petrov, M. Hristov, Berbatov, Jankovic, Manchev

The Swedish manager -=[101st]=- has reviewed the game tape and is currently unsure of what to make of the six game thriller which will prove to be one of the more exciting game of the tournament, that also produced possibly the goal of the tournament.

"I have reviwed the tape and i will need to sit down with my staff and have a look at just where we went wrong... I believe that our attacking power has shown its full force... and can't get much better so that leaves us to focus on our defense. but that was always obvious. with players like Ljunberg, Larsson, kallstrom and Ibrahimovic goals were always going to come thick and fast. The greatest measure of a great team is their defense and i believe that we are a great team so we will need to plug our defense a little more for the game that i feel will decide second place, our game V the Danes. I have heard that grønkjær may not be playing due to the tradgic death of his mother. Can anyone confirm this?"

At this point in time we are unable to confirm this after telling -=[101st]=- this he went on to say.

"Ahh okay, well whether he does play or not, that will be the point were all bets are off... we are playing for our place in the Quarter Finals, and i will be damned if i am going to let the Danes take our spot."

The temperature is begging to rise in Group C with neither team wanting their Scandinavian counter-parts to take their spot. Stay turned for more news concerning Euro 2004 and exclusive interviews.

Insight-TV,

Welcome to day 4 of the championship, as we bring you, The Czech Republic V Latvia and the game of the day, Germany V Netherlands. As you all saw yesterday's events were full of incident and controversy, and one wonders if we will have any today, as there is an Eastern European derby game, and Germany and the Netherlands need no build up, this game is going to reach boiling point as we have seen over the years.

But first we have the Czechs, European finalists in 96, losing out to Germany, up against the new comer's Latvia, who amazingly qualified by upsetting the odds and shocking Turkey. Most of their players are of an unknown quantity, but there is one premiership player present in Southampton forward, Marian Pahars. They are playing a 4-5-1, so have opted to pack the midfield and play Pahars as a long striker. News just in, that the Latvian manager has been sacked by the Latvian football association, ahead of this game, what an amazing development, as on day 2 we had the Swiss manager going awol, and today we see the Latvian coach, jacro, getting axed. There was this statement issued by the Latvian FA

"we are to inform the Latvian people, the Euro organisers and all involved that we have decided to relieve Jacro, from his duty as Latvia coach, the details as to why we cannot disclose at this moment in time. We are aware that the timing couldnt have come at a worse time"

And the problem has got worse, at such short notice there is no one that can stand in, and it is, Captain Isakovs, who play as player manager. he has employed some tactics and has released a team sheet. Let's take a look at the lineups.

Czech Republic (4-4-2) Blazek, Bolf, Jankulovski, Hubschman, Grygera, Rosicky, Poborsky, Nedved, Smicer, Barros, Koller.

Latvia: (4-5-1) Kolonko, Stepanovs, Zemlinskis, Blaonadezdin, Isakovs (C) Laizarns, Bleidelis, Lobanovs, Stolcers, Rubins, Pahars.

Ok, well, our first bit of controversy already then, as we go over to Portugal for the game.
