Squads

Note: To get players i their proper places, change the formation to that shown and put the players in the order shown.

LATIN FLAIR - Classic Argentina

Formation: 4-3-1-2 (4-4-2 A)

GK 23 Fillol
CBT 19 Ruggeri
CBT 15 Passarella
RB 9 Cuciuffo
LB 13 Garre
DMF 1 Ardiles
RMF 14 Giusti
LMF 7 Burruchaga
OMF 10 Maradona
CF 21 Kempes
CF 36 Di Stefano

Captain: Passarella Corner Right: Burruchaga Corner Left: Ardiles
Short Free Kicks: Maradona Long Free Kicks: Ardiles Penalties: Passarella

The defence is formidable. In front of arguably the finest South American keeper ever sits a brutal back four. Ruggeri gets in ahead of Olguin, and World Cup winner Cuciuffo adds balance and precision. Ruggeri was a fine and consistant defender of the 1990s, and next to him sits one of the great sweepers, the uncompromising Daniel Passarella.
With Ardiles to do the donkey work, Giusti, Maradona, and his capable lieutenant Burruchaga would be free to run at defences and link up with the forwards. Di Stefano, being one of the finest players ever to grace a pitch, was an easy choice: Kempes gets the place alongside him, as his goal won a World Cup in 1978. Amazingly, there is no room for some serious talent like Valdano, Caniggia or Pumpido.

TIPS
* The defence and keeper are highly capable, so a cynical game is possible. Argentina are known for their dirty tactics, and a counter-attacking game would play to these strengths.

* However, this team is best when on the offensive. The firepower in this side is awesome, and with Maradona and Di Stefano, they have two of the finest attacking players ever. Passarella and Ruggeri are strong enough to make sure you don't get caught short at the back.

* Use Ardiles as a holding defensive-midfielder. His position is good for linking to either wing, and keeping him back allows the rest of teh midfield to push forward.

MASTERS OF THE MACARANA - Classic Brazil

Formation: 4-3-1-2 (4-4-2 A)

GK 1 Gylmar
CBT 4 Junior Cesar
CBT 11 Carlos Alberto
RB 23 Djalma Santos
LB 12 Nilton Santos
DMF 15 Falcao
RMF 8 Socrates
LMF 18 Zico
OMF 10 Pele
CF 17 Jairzinho
CF 16 Garrincha

Captain: Pele Corner Right: Zico Corner Left: Zico
Short Free Kicks: Zico Long Free Kicks: Zico Penalties: Socrates

This being Brazil, the defence isn't particularly impressive (I ceratinly wasn't agonising about who to leave out). Julio Cesar gets the vote because he was one of the only Brazilian defenders who worked well in a combination (with Edinho, 1986). Djalma Santos was big and scary, and adds serious bite, and he and Nilton Santos were the full-backs in the 1958 World Cup winning side. The goalkeeper, Gylmar, was Brazil's keeper in the 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups.
'Not that amazing' could not be said of the midfield - numerous world class players didn't even make the bench (Zagallo, Ademir, Leonidas). I went for Zico for his phenomenal set pieces and movement, as Socrates wasn't over-fond of running.
1950s legend Vava and the excellent Tostao, both on the bench, would score shed-loads of goals with help from Garrincha and Jairzinho.
But then, does it really matter how good any of them are? Any team with Pele in it would be awesome.

TIPS
* The defense is the weakest of all the classic teams, but the strike-force is the most powerful. Just go all-out attack.

* The formation os set to mirror the all-conquering 1970s side, but some opponents like to play defensive (like Classic Italy). Brazil were pioneers of the 4-2-4 formation, which helped them win the 1958 World Cup. If you want to use this system, bring Falcao and Pele to the central midfield, and use Rivelino and Tostao as the inside-forwards. With four strikers of this calibre, the opposition won't know what hit them!

* Practically every player on this team has superb attack statistics (even the defenders), so if you get an opening, shoot!

ELEVEN LIONS - Classic England

Formation: 4-4-2 (default)

GK 1 Banks
CBT 6 Moore
CBT 4 Butcher
RB 20 Edwards
LB 17 Sansom
CMF 7 Mattews
CMF 9 Charlton
CMF 16 Robson
CMF 11 Finney
CF 12 Lineker
CF 23 Dean

Captain: Moore Corner Right: Robson Corner Left: Mattews
Short Free Kicks: Charlton Long Free Kicks: Finney Penalties: Lineker

I was tempted with 3-5-2, due to the lack of great English full-backs, but that wouldn't be England so 4-4-2 it is. Unfortunatly, this meant having to leave out a true great, the much capped Billy Wright. Leaving out Moore was unthinkable, and the monolithic Duncan Edwards adds much needed strength and attacking power. At 6' 4", Terry Butcher makes a towering presence at full-back, and his 9 Scottish title wins with rangers shows he is dependable as he is gutsy (who can forget that 1989 game against Sweden?). Kenny Sansom adds pace to the wing, just like Ashley Cole does in today's side.
The Finney/Mattews 'who's better?' debate is nullified, as they're both present. Meanwhile, Bryan Robson's tackling and stamina would allow Charlton to push up behind the front two. I went for a big man/quick man combination up front, with Lineker shading Greaves as the role of the quick man. Dean was a towering presence, creating as well as scoring goals with his aerial presence. And of course, there is the ever-famous Geoff Hurst warming the bench if England needed another extra-time comeback.

TIPS
* This team is perfectly capable of defending or attacking with equal efficiency.

* Finney and Mattews are superb attackers, either in the centre or down the wing, while Edwards and Sansom can also push forward during an attack.

* Assign Bobby Moore to mark the oppositions most dangerous forward. He'll stick to him like glue, wheras Butcher is big enough to deal with any crosses designed to get round the back.

That is well done mate. That is going to be a big help, especially the classic Brazil. Many thanks.
