It doesn't - I tried pressing right ot left and it just goes wide

Try using the triangle when you kick the corner.
Circle then triangle.

I usually scores powerful header with that.

For me it's just about finding some players that are able to make decent shots every time, and only use them to shoot from distance. Other wise i try to score from crosses etc. - Currently i have one decent shooter in my team, and he makes shots with both power and placement every time. It is funny since i don't do anything different when controlling him
