Fifa 08.

Played it at a friend's house at the weekend (the first FIFA I have played since probably '05 or something). I wanted to hate it. I wanted it to be rubbish, and still inferior to my beloved PES which I have stuck with since ISS on the N64. But I'm afraid it isn't. FIFA 08 is the game PES2008 should have been. Good AI, slick passing, great options, brilliant graphics, more than 6 stadiums Konami and every time I shoot at goal the keeper doesn't fluff it into his own net. Great online too.

If you want my advice, screw PES2008. Sell the half baked, rushed, sorry excuse of next gen football game and buy FIFA 08. It's all I'll be playing until Konami get their shit together. Hopefully with PES2009.

I played it at the weekend too, I loved it...but I prefer PES all the way, there is something about FIFA I just cant get to grips with, something that tells me this isn't right, its odd but thats the way it is.

The shooting mechanics for one. Square-thighed players for two. The silly sweating players trick for Three. Weather? muddy kits? Four. The list does go on. And on.

PES is no better mind, but i 'feel' still plays a better game.

I think the weather and muddy kits add to the realism, certainly for us Premiership fans!

The player also look more realistic running and dribbling too. UNlike on PES2008, where they either run bolt upright without ever glancing at the ball or hunched over.

Shooting is easier than PES2008 which takes some of the challenge away, but the keepers are great. One handed saves and not a fluff in sight.

Seabass better get his shit together. PES finally has some very strong competition in my opinion.

When you mention players looking real, have you seen them close up? I had FIFA08 for the PS3 shortly after release & was seriously unimpressed with the visuals.

Agreed, up close some players are hit and miss. But the wider view of them looks realistic, as they all move and run like real life. No slow down also helps!

Is there muddy kits on PES2008? I can't say I have noticed!

When I first played FIFA 08, I thought it was OK. When I played it a bit more, I felt out of control, response was bad, and in general it felt much more restricting than PES, particularly in the box, and I thought 'something' was wrong with it, despite all of its obvious strong points. Control just wasn't right, and it made me feel that PES was still better.

Turns out I was sh*t at it.

I'm a bit better now, and I've experienced a few of those formerly-only-PES moments against the AI and against buddies. The game is very, very good, and it IS the game PES should've been. I still miss the D-pad, though. I'm hating the analog control right now, guess I'll have to learn how to use it for next year.

The player models are the only thing that puzzles me. Why is it so difficult for EA to get them right? In my opinion, the models in PES 2008 are perfect.

Exciting times, nevertheless. 2009 should offer two great titles of football sim. You could say that has never happened before (it certainly didn't happen this year, OUCH!)

Very well written - that's exactly the same feeling I had when I first played PES 2008, I thought "FIFA is actually better this year". Still, FIFA08 is not better than PES 2008 - And I think the question should be Wich one is worse??

Men, I would've been satisfied with the same Old PES Game Play and some Next Gen Graphics - But it seems Good Graphics and Game Play is something very hard to accomplish. Can only hope PES 2009 accomplishes that, until then PES 2007 or PES 2008 on PS2.

I agree with many of you. At first fifa seemed to be missing something. The more you play it though, something starts to click. I hate to admit it and I even still try lie to myself on the odd occasion, but this year, fifa is the better title. I never thought I'd see the day. Hopefully this will prove to be a blessing though, perhaps it will light a fire under Konami and make them come back next year with the title we were all expecting.

EA have been passengers in the football gaming world for too long. A little friendly competition can only help both companies produce better and better titles.

Weird,

The more I played it, the less I liked it, it's a much better game than it was before, no doubt, but it still isn't quite as good when it comes to actual gameplay - I've got about 500 hours logged on Fifa 08 playing in their career mode thus far.

I am really enjoying the new PES (only have about 100 hours into the master league right now, we didn't get the game here in the States until the beginning of March).

The more I play this version, the more I like it. I'll come back to this thread later and tell you the details of why.

Also weirdly, I like PES 2008's "non photo realistic" look better than Fifa's more "photo realistic" look.

Let's face it, licence, GUI presentation, etc. are all better in Fifa 08 than PES, but the physics and feel are still feel better to me in PES.

BtW, we should all be happy that both games are around and competitive; I had a chance to talk to some of the EA guys who work on it at a show, and they pretty much told me that many of the improvements in Fifa the last few years are directly due to PES's threat to their dominance in sports - They were almost happy that PES was around, so they could have a reason to ask for more/ do more feture-wise in their game - Don't forget that Fifa didn't even have a career mode until after the success that PES showed with it. Also notice the controller changes, intro of a more realistic physics model, etc. as time as gone on...

Anyway, kind of a "stream of consciousness" response; more later!

Nahh, just sometimes think that in th middle of all the competitive chat about what's best and what (supposedly) sucks, we can forget that having two outstanding football games available isn't a bad thing?

i havent played the new fifa but i had a little go of 06 and the one thing i can say i really wish pes would use was when the balls coming to your man using the right analog to play the ball in the direction you want to go in, would make pes so much better

There are two things about FIFA I absolutely want to see in PES 09:

1) Take away the "force fields". If I want to stand 2 inches away from my teammate when receiving a throw in, so be it. If I want to go challenge the keeper, let me do it.

2) FIFA has much more freedom when receiving the ball / marking. That means the player actually goes where you point him to, which makes marking a bit more difficult, but feels great when your player isn't just rooted to the ground while the ball approaches him, and responds normally (not like he's waking up) when you try to move him towards the ball of away from it. It's like a perpetual super cancel, and I love it.

As a Sheff Wed fan, I should like FIFA 2008. But I don't. The PS2 I had was the same as every FIFA since the Euro 2004 version (which was poor gameplay wise, but had some cracking options) and the PS3 version tries to hard. With Pro Evo you see it's exactly that, Evolution from the last game. With FIFA the passing doesn't feel right (which is 80% of a football game) and the shots bend like a crossbar with Paddy Kenny on it.
