Paid Roster Updates
Wednesday, September 3, 2008

There was always going to be a time when roster updates where going to cost the gamer.

The revenue stream from non-sports games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero is alluring to EA Sports and they have been trying to find ways of introducing this into their sports line.

EA March Madness charges you for the real bracket. In Tiger 09, you can spend MS points to get clubs and items otherwise earned as you progress through the game. Now in order to get weekly roster updates in FIFA 09, called Adidas Live Season, you will need to shell out MS Points to update two or more leagues. You get one free.

I understand that weekly roster updates are more time consuming than monthly or in the case of FIFA, twice, but this is the beginning of true microtransactions in sports games.

There are a ton of pitfalls to the actual implementation of Live Season. One is the ability for EA Sports not to over compensate for player’s performance. If Robinho scores 3 against Hull FC on a weekday game and then scores 1 with an assist on the weekend, does that mean his stats will jump dramtically making him an uber-Robinho.

The EA servers have to be reliable. There cannot be a week where the servers are down or you can’t update your live season.

The cost has to be reasonable. EA Sports states that you get one league for free but if you want any of the other leagues, there will be a cost. EA Sports has not released the pricing structue but I would bet it would be around $2.50 per additional league. The leagues (counties and top divisions) that will be update are England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Mexico. So you get one league and pay for the rest. It could be $10.00 for 5 leagues.

What bothers me is not that they are charging for this feature, though if you think about it, you are paying $59.99 for the game and let’s say another $10 for the roster updates. That’s around $69.99 for a feature entitled, ADIDAS Live Season, that is only for exibition and online matches. You have coporate sponsorship and EA Sports is passing the cost onto the consumer.

I don’t expect a company to give away a labor intensive feature but I would hope that Adidas’ sponsorship is subsidizing the cost and we get the feature for a reasonable price.

Was there any need to make a seperate thread about that in the PES2009 section when this is the Fifa thread?

David Rutter or whatever his name said in an interview that players who already have a high rating e.g 88 will only increase by 1 where as the lower rated players e.g in the 60s and 70s will increase by more.

And you can't really complain about the price because that is just made up by whoever wrote that article and EA haven't confirmed the price.

Just downloaded the demo, and the available teams to choose from are:

Shalke04
Marseille
Chelsea
Real Madrid
AC Milan
Toronto FC

The default stadium is Wembley and the halfs last 2 minutes with the Teamgeist ball.

I've just finished playing my first match, I chose Real Madrid and opted to face Marseille (on difficulty 2 out 3). It ended 0-0 but I have to say I was quite pleased with FIFA 09. They've finally sorted out the ball physics so the ball moves in a realistic manner, this is the point that put me off FIFA 08 most after playing the demo as the physics were dreadful. I threw in some terrible tackles in my first match on this FIFA 09 demo, got a yellow card and Pepe received a red card. Mainly because I'm not used to the tackling system of FIFA yet, that and I wanted to see how they fly on this game. ;)

My match ended up going to penalties which was a nice surprise as I was just expecting it to be classed as a draw. What was even better was that I won 4-2, although Marseille's first miss was from Cisse (yes, the Sunderland player) but I'm willing to look past that as I'm sure this can be changed in the full game.

Something strange though, and probably not good was the fact that despite the match being Real Madrid vs. Marseille I heard chants of "Chelsea, wherever you may be..." and "U-N-I-T-E-D, United are the team for me..." among other British chants. Strange I know, hope this doesn't reflect the full game.

I played a match and drew but didn't go to penalties.. How come ?

Perhaps because I was playing against a human opponent and not the COM...

The PC demo is no different from Fifa 08...

It's only the up close images that look different and maybe the fact that you can score from over 40 yards out. I hope that's not the case with the full game.

I think thats a little harsh to be honest. I've played 5 games on the demo for the PC and i was relatively impressed. Heres my summary

The passing has improved, it looks much slicker and realistic, the ball doesn't have that horrible bobble with every pass.

The nets look better now, no more of that static goal frame. The nets now roll around when the ball hits it, albeit not as nicely as PES, but its still an improvement.

New animations and the new jostling system is impressive, players like Drogba and Terry will win most physical battles, both in the air and on the deck.

The gameplay is noticeably quicker, but not so much that its unrecognisable from previous FIFA's.

Its a marked improvement on both Euro 2008 and FIFA 08.

Its now easier to ghost past players and break into the box, pace is a vital asset in your forwards, unless you quickly master the tricks side of things.

I wasn't overly impressed by the ball physics, it still appears a little unrealstic, the crossing is a bit floaty and the shooting doesn't feel brilliant, but then thats been my criticism of all the other FIFAs too, nothings changed there.

Despite some new introductions and a more polished look, it still retains that old FIFA style, make of that statment what you will.

Set piece system is in dire need of revamping.

And finally, its evident that certain bugs need working out. In 3 out of the 5 games i played, something freaky happened. One incident involved a Van der Vaart free-kick ballooned over and then cutting to a celebration scene, and then to a goal kick.

I'll give it a generous 8/10. A slight improvement, definately more polished, some nice new touches to this edition of FIFA. But the way PES is looking, in the gameplay videos, the new be-a-legend mode, and the champions league inclusion, some newer touches to the ML. I think that could be a 9.5/10.

I still don't think this years FIFA was as good as last years PES.

Hmm...

What are you playing it on ? On PC its almost identical to Fifa 08.

Maybe the only thing that's changed is shooting from long range. Some of the goals I'm scoring are just silly..
