FIFA and EA liscensing

Here is the article: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/spo...6/news/6148440/ea-nets-fifa-license-extension

So basically the license goes until 2014...will Fifa then grant Konami access to teams as well? I think it would only be better for Fifa and all the leagues in the world with two good game developers in Konami and EA duking it out. Face it, although recently it has been lopsided, you may not like Fifa but it does what it sets out to do, provide a general footy experience everyone can enjoy. PES also gives nice entertainment value for the buck but for a different crowd. Both are very good at what they do except PES is lacking in the licensing department, which for hardcore footy gamers is a hard pill to swallow.

anyways based on NET INCOME, Konami as a whole is 1/3 the size of EA SPORTS and around 1/6 the size of Electronic Arts itself. So just using that to give some kind of perspective, I think post 2014 Konami will have somewhat a difficult time bringing the dough to the table, but then again EA does need licenses from multiple sports so Konami might indeed have some chance of cutting an even deal with Fifa as EA has as well.

What do you guys think?

At least outside the US, the FIFA Series is the most successful one among the other EA Sports Series.
So why should they let down their opportunity to stay the only one with the correct licenses for the most famous Soccer Leagues ?

Sad for us, but they know it from other Franchises in the US, how hard it is to loose the unique feature.

As long as Konami is not bringing a lot of Effort / Money to the Party, there is even for the Clubs/League no reason to not sell their licenses to exclusive Partner.

Compare to the Broadcast rights. How much effort Sky is generating to keep the exclusive licenses, at least for PL and Bundeslga (don't know about the others)

btw.: Didn't you noticed how old you source is ? Shoulnd't be any kind of a news for most of us.

EASports will move heaven and Earth to ensure they tie that FIFA license up for the forseeable future.

If I were Konami, I would try and chip away at it league by league. Premier League would be the no1 priority.

If Konami got full licensing I would hope they added all three kits or at least some form of optional shorts and socks option.

I hate using away kits for home games but without the option to alter things this would be the only option in some matches.

I don't mind things as they are to be honest.

But how ?

EA is paying a hug he amount of Money for the exclusive rights, plus they probably offer a lot of marketing value for the Leagues.

If Konami want to chime in, EA will, if at all, pay way less money and will claim to drop marketing as well, so Konami would have to compensate for the lower EA fees plus a a lot of extra bugs to make the Leagues feel all right while loosing a long time exclusive partnership with loads of benefits.

Conclusion:

Sorry, but I don't see any way happening here:(

Konami will never have the same kind of funds to acquire the Fifa License anyway as someone else said EA will snap another 4 years or so just before the current contract runs out.

Yah I know how old the source is but most people I'm guessing don't know the licensing agreement since if you are in your mid 20s you were still in high school and had other things to worry about lol and probably didnt give it another thought...

konami are loaded mate, lets face it.

Yeh konami is loaded, but so is EA. They have roughly 3 times the buying power of Konami as EA SPORTS and as just EA they have 6 times the buying power of Konami (obvs rough estimate based on net income)

I think there may be a joint licensing agreement, because think about it in terms of game theory logic. The obvs determinant and motivator is money, and if Konami is actually willing, then Fifa will have on their hands two companies who want licensing rights. This doesnt mean two times the money but it does mean in increased revenue flow for Fifa. Another pro for Fifa is that given the two different styles of the games an even wider audience will be exposed to the Fifa brand.

Now I agree EA will work very very hard to keep their exclusive rights unless they determine it costs more to have exclusive rights than to share the rights. The only way that can happen is if Konami bid higher than that certain breaking point EA have in which they refuse to spend any more money. You have to remember they have to have money to develop a whole slew of other games including large titles such as Battlefield 3 and so on. If thats the case it may be cheaper to share the rights with Konami.

At the end of the day it is all up to Fifa. Fifa is the one with the ultimate decision and sometimes things do happen that contradict the harsh rules of economics (meaning people sometimes make decisions from their heart) and you never know who the persons are who represent Fifa so I guess all we have is to remain hopeful and cross our fingers.

At the end of the day EA will still get the Fifa license because Fifa games sell a lot more than PES does.
