Formation Settings

Hi I'm experimenting with the formation settings, hoping to get the best out of my team. I mainly play with one of two formations, 4-4-2 and 4-5-1. Now for a long time me and my friends had only done the 'basics' of formation settings; such as setting formation, postion edit, choosing the team line-up, then turn on a quick setting. Then we got more into it; we used the individual options more often, setting attack/defence levels, selecting roles like man marking. Then there is team option; attack/defence, defence system, team strategy and settings list. And finally your strategy options consisting of a choice of 4 settings, either used manually or semi-auto. This is how my team is set up:-

4-4-2

Team: Settings List is Manual, Line defence, A,A,B,A.

strategy set to Semi-Auto; Centre attack, R.Side attack, Opp.Side attack and counter attack.

Individual: Defenders have no attack arrows, each player is set to high defence.

Midfielders all have an attack arrow pointing forwards, each player is set to low defence.

Forwards both have attack arrows pointing forwrds, with one player having a medium defence (target man being James Beattie) and the other a low defence (Marcus Bent).

With this set up i managed to win the master league on 3 stars, beating arsenal by 1 point. It was successful in most games, there was free flowing football but i need to tweak it before its a perfect set up. Obviously i needed to use the 4-5-1 formation for some games and sometimes dropped points to not-so-good opposition, but i have to say it the tinkering worked wonders. Before I did all this the team never really operated that well all over the pitch! Defence got caught on the break, midfield never advanced to attack and into good positions, so the poor forwards never got much service and relied mostly on set pieces to get a goal. It was just too inconsistent. I just think if you can get these settings right for your team you'll really enjoy the football and get the most out of the game, and a setting not used properly seriously screws things up. I see many posts on here about general play such as free kicks and corners etc but not one about the formation settings which is the heart of pes and the key to success if its set up properly. I've only recently started to properly tinker with everything in the formation settings and i'd like to know what works best for you.

Posting images of your formation would make things easier to see. I find it difficult to play with 1 striker as I need options up front.

I would do that but I am using the ps2 version so cannot take screen shots. Your better printing my post out and use it in reference while looking at the formation settings it may be more clearer that way than just reading it as it is here.

I am going to a tournament on Sunday so I don't have the time for experimenting with new formations. Might take a look next week.

And you didn't mention which 4-4-2 formation you are talking about: A, B or C?

I used 'C', stretched the midfield a bit so the side mids hugged the line and pushed the centre mids forward 2 notches. the strkers are pushed up deep into the goal area. Roles are as follows; LB, CB, CB, RB, LMF, OMF, CMF, RMF, CF, CF. you should have a bash next week

U should have everything set to manual and u should be using 2 or even three formations in game to help with different situations. On the plus side, it will confuse your mate(s). I use a 4-2-2-2 formation and have 2 other formations. One is a 3-5-2 formation for possesion in the midfield and going down the centre and I have a 4-2-4 formation for some attacking and wing play. Just change them using the strategy buttons for some great results.

A good situation where formations were deadly was yesterday when I played my m8. He decided to go with a 3-5-2 so I used the 4-2-4 formation to really exploit his lack of defence. Worked to great effect :) Won all my games. He just kept asking me how come I had so much space. :) would never tell him though. He has to figure it out like I did. Also helped get to the final of a tournament in Harrow where I stupidly lost :( by not following my own rules
