Games Tm Reviews Both Footie Games

Just got the lastest games tm and it reviews both Fifa 08 and Pro Evo 08. Sadly it's given Fifa 08 a better score, giving Pro Evo only 7 whilst Fifa gets 8.

It comments on how the two games have switched places, with Fifa now the more arcadey of the two and Fifa adopting a more realistic approach.

A big criticism was the fact that Pro Evo hasn't advanced anywhere near as much as it should have, and that it wasn't a next gen game, but one rooted in the past with some added sheen.

The "Be A Pro" mode, that's Libero Grande style of only controlling one player, has apparently been realised exellently, and the mag states that the 5 v 5 mode that's been announced for online could be amazing if properly done.

All in all i'm gutted. I haven't played Fifa yet, but i'm seriously considering renting it. The mag rarely steers me wrong, and i have been severely disappointed with Pro E this year. The laziness in the creation of the game is so apparent. The victory cut-scenes are the same, the bizarre view of a massive stadium when you win a cup is still there...it's very much teh same game.

Although i like some of the gameplay changes, passing and dribbling i think have been improved well, i just don't think it merited me spending any money on it. I would've preferred to just dload an option file updating my Pro Evo 6.

Anyway, thought everyone would be interested, if this has already been posted somewhere else i apologise.

I woudnt worry about it , thats just another magazine that has been bought out by EA propaganda. It happens all the time, they probably get a big fat cheque for giving FIFA a better score than PES. Any self respecting gamer knows EA games ALWAYS hype there games and go way overboard. Konami footy is King and always shall be.

I don't know, Games TM are not the kind of magazine to be bought out. I know EA always hype their games, but you can't just say that Konami footie will always be king. To be at the top of their game they have to keep improving the games, and they're not.

It quite simple, Fifa got a better score because fifa is the better game.

Er you do realise its made by EA right? Thats never a good sign of a games quality since EA pump out trash 24/7 . Oh and if you dont think its easy to make a reviewer bump a games score, just look at BioShock on PC. That game was hyped in every way and got rave reviews in the mags. But PC Gamer got an exclusive from Ken Levine and 2K games to review it first. Guess what, It got top marks in the mag with the reviewer basically falling over himself to praise the game. No where in the mag did he mention the countless MAJOR game stopping bugs, farsical DRM,rediculously bad controls designed for controllers, the non-existant customer support, and the major flaws in the game its graphics and gameplay. And you know what, the game sold like hot-cakes because almost everyone else reviewing it for a major site or mag did the same as PC gamer.

Now you may think this is just because BioShock is just such a good game that the flaws can be overlooked. Sorry but no, its nothing special just another run of the mill shooter game. How can you tell? Simple, how many sites use BioShock for a benchmark? How many patches has the game had since release? How did 2K games respond to queries on the game and help requests? I will let the answers speak for themselves.

By nature ALL reviews of games from top sites and/or mags are biased, for fear of upsetting a big dev house or publisher which would mean next time around they wont get an exclusive or that there views will be palmed off as crackpot becuase every OTHER review site is singing a games praises.

Heh you can call me paranoid if you like but I have seen it happen first hand. Game gets previewed, gets slated, that reviewer gets ignored for future releases. Its all about spin and marketing these days. When they say games are taking up to 2 million to make, what they fail to say is a rather large chunk of that doesnt go on the game development its goes on advertising and schmoosing.

Any magazine that gives anything more than an 8 to either PES or FIFA this year are in the pockets of the publishing companies as far as I am concerned.

PES2008 and indeed every ProEv game from PES4 onwards is a classic example of how you can improve something and also make it worse. But with PES2008, they really have fucked up big style.....

PES2008 7.5

FIFA08...cant really comment on previous FIFA games as I have never really gave them a bash cos they have always just seemed plain shite. FIFA08 however is different and it plays quite a nice game of soccer...if a little on the unresponsive side.....Course.....there are plenty of lame flaws in this title (although not nearly as much as with MESS2008) which means it is far from a classic.....but at least it is going in the right direction...unlike its only other competitor.

FIFA08 7.8

After seeing the massive amount of propaganda and messiah-worth hailing by the press that Halo 3 got, you can't believe a reviewer anymore. Such a mediocre game that one is, save for the multiplayer part, which however adds nothing new to Halo 2. Microsoft is trying to make it a landmark in videogame history, when in fact it's just as groundbreaking as PES 2008 :D

I agree with Mat in that neither game deserves to reach 8. And I think FIFA should get more credit for their massive leap forward, whereas KONAMI should be stirred a little out of their sleep.

fifa 08 is a really good game, especially if you played the last one and you can see what a gigantic step forwards 08 was. i havent played pes08 but everything ive heard hasnt exactly made me want to. maybe a few bad reviews will make them try harder next year, the developers are just getting too comfortable.

I own both PES and FIFA on the 360 (although I have to say PES was my first choice and I snapped up FIFA for 39€ at Play.com when it was on sale) and I keep wondering "why can't we get a game that incorporates the good things of these two?".

I mainly bought FIFA to get all the shite arse Austrian Club Teams to play with (that's where I'm from) - which I couldn't be bothered to create in PES because they would be as much a waste of space in PES as they are in real life. But it's still fun to battle it out with my mates with the teams we know best.

No doubt FIFA looks and sounds great, the licensing is ridiculously detailled and the Be a Pro feature is interesting. However as soon as the game starts my quarrels with the game start as well - somehow I just don't "feel" it, it all seems too choppy and inaccurate. The funny thing though is, that I think playing FIFA improves my PES play as I usually play better in PES after a few FIFA games, maybe it's because PES allows me to play the way I want to (at least most of the time).

So I'm caught somewhere in the middle - I love PES for its gameplay and overall feel but the lack of online modes, licenses and novelties in general make it seem a bit lackluster. FIFA on the other hand looks awesome and has some interesting features but once the match starts, the magic disappears for me...

i think the overall gameplay is pretty good compared to pes. pes is still definitely more intuitive but fifa plays more like a real game of football, it looks more like a real game of football, and i think this time next year it'll have everything going for it including the intuitiveness which is to be honest the only think pes is clinging onto.

Well by the sounds from what that Seabass chap says, PES2009 is gonna be the big make over we all crave. Could be hype talk, or maybe they know that people are naturally gonna buy the first Next Gen release, wether theres improvements or not.

But he will surely be aware that people have had enough now, i like PES2008, but its no more than a mere update of PES 6.

FIFA will catch up again next year, because they put effort in. Konami have had us all by the balls for years, and they know it too. But our balls are getting slippy and they could soon lose there grip (if you get my meaning, not sure why i used testicals in that) but you get my picture.
