i actually spent a while testing all this a while back but never got round to posting
there's no need for this double tap business
although the R1 idea is a good one. normally when a player receives the ball he tries to get it to his feet as quickly as possible. if you hold R1 as it reaches him he trys to keep it in the air (ie big chest) this allows you to then try and turn the player away from the goal and press square at the very last moment to allow the overhead kick. be carefull wih the R1 press though, if you are holding a direction he will try to control it in that direction.
go into free training and just practice, best to use players with high technique so the ball doesn't go flying, i prefer classic brazil!

Release the direction >> Press shoot and holds R2...
As everyone mentioned the positioning of the player is very important ...
