how do i defend good?

What i usually do is i line my defence, then depending on the opponent give one of the center backs the role of a sweeper. If i'm up against a team like Barca who have a deadly finisher in Eto'o i would get one of my defenders to man mark him, giving him less oppertunity's to break through the defence. If you wanted to reallt stop a team who play with 1 striker set both your center backs to man mark the lone striker. It works with me.:)

Im good at defending, I just use the R2 button to settle my player in a position to win headers and it eases the pressure on you, esp from corners and all that.

You cant always have a perfectly timed tackle in this game either, as I have made timely slide tackles to see them being chalked up as a penalty, so try and stay on your feet when defending, obviously.

When youre clearing the ball from defence hold L1 and press O to give a good clearance pass, it could work out well for you, as they sometimes go in behind the oppositions defence.

If you are playing online or against a friend remember that you are more clever than the computer.

If the ball is with their full back and you change to your full back, then it will leave the winger wide open as the centre backs won't cover. This means you are open to a through ball and them getting an easy cross in. To counteract this use the full back you control to run with their winger before the through ball is played.

This looks kind of odd and some people try to take you full back on (who should be running backwards with the winger). If they do this you should be able to wait for them to make a bad touch and nick in and take the ball. The other option is that they cut inside in which case one of your centre backs will tackle them.

This method basically eliminates the threat of wingers.

:R2: is good for locking on an opponent and kicking the ball away but you have to use :R1: as well for physical tackling. the trick is to push them both with the right direction when you tackle.

The same way that :R2: shot is used to guarantee that no easy shot at goal goes to waste, my tip for defense makes sure no close ball goes past your defenders.

To defend good i make sure my fullback are very quick, and the centre backs are tall and also quite quick, usually works for me.

Here's a tip that works for me:

If they have players running down the wing and putting in crosses, then hold down :square: to make one of your players close him down, while you position the player you are controlling in the box or on a man. Works a treat, and you would be surprised how often the player cleanly wins the balls. If he gets it, then you automatically gain control of him to clear it.:)

Heres an actual good tip, get a CB with pace + decent height... my recommendation = Perea (Atl. Madrid) Gallas (Chelsea)

I have to say, playing in six stars leaves you with only a few realistic choices of how to defend. Getting the best defenders in the game won't do you any good against teams with good side attack abilities. Neither does holding :square: make your players react to the fancy dribbling of their opponents, and if they do close down on your opponent without the cursor on their heads they will foul for sure.

About the second press:

Don’t gamble with holding :square: when you're in a 1-on-1 situation unless you are positive that your team mate will completely block the opposition's space. Pressing :square: during an opponent's pass might help you intercept if you are blocking the receiver, but if you're behind the receiver, then your player will be an easy target for a feint. Better let your team mate stay behind you, unless he is pressing from the front where he might help block a wider angle. In general your team mates are probably marking an opponent, so pressing :square: might create a gap in your defense. Also multiple presses are always better than holding :square:.

As for the main topic, 1-on-1 defense:

Your opponent is either blocking you from the ball or dribbling towards you preparing to take you on:

If he is blocking the ball from you, simply hold :R1:+:R2:+ direction(analog or D-pad) to reach the ball around the opponent. Don't create any gaps around you and maintain your possesion. Don’t make an issue out of stealing the ball either. If your opponent passed to the back then you have succeeded.

If he is facing you, hold :R1:+:R2:+ finger on D-pad facing opponent and ready to press either up or down when opponent is running side ways or vice versa (press left or right if opponent is running up or down) the moment the ball is in range, you might have a choice to clear, tackle, slide, or steal and dribble.

:R1:+:R2: guarantees that your defender won't let any ball go through him and makes him automatically tackle and slide only when it is the proper thing to do.
I’m not sure but I think the same technique applies to shooting as well. I scored by pure chance from outside the penalty area, (I pressed :R1:+:R2: to position my forward and filled the shot gauge to a third) The result: a low-slow ball that wickedly hit the ground and over the keeper’s hands right above the goal line on 6 stars. The shooter’s shot technique was below 85!

What exactly does R1 do in defence ? and R2 ? The normal tackle button (I change my buttons - from playing FIFA about 10 yerars ago and have never changed back) doesnt seem to do much.

I understand that but when I press R2 it always puts my defender on his backside rather than locking onto the opposition's player

Back side? You should be running behind your opponent, not locking on him.

Basicly, Slide your index finger to, from and between :R1: and :R2:

Example 1#: Run behind opponent, index finger on :R1:
when you reach him, physically engage in his direction and slide your finger between :R1:&:R2:. A good opponent making turns will force you to tackle, slide or clear.

Got the ball? Now you have two options>

1) Slide finger all the way to :R2: to prepare for a pass.
2) Slide your finger back to :R1: for dribbling away with the ball (not recomended)

Example 2#: To intercept a high ball when opponent is close to you:
run towards the ball :R1:>

In the moment of interception with chest, slide finger between :R1:&:R2: with a desired direction (away from opp.) to perfectly alter the ball's direction with your chest, now the ball is bouncing off your chest and away from the opposition, and landing at your feet>

Opponent still locking on you?> you have two options

1) The moment the ball lands on your feet, slide your finger down to :R2: with another direction for an accurate second touch with your foot.
2) return your finger to :R1: and run as fast as you can (rarely works)

Shoulder buttons should be pressed routinely and be memorized. Pressing the right direction by reacting to the opposition's movements is what decides the outcome of your tackles.

If your opponent is dribbling sideways, don't run towards him. Wait for him to reach you and then you have only (2) direction that you need to press: Up or Down.
