Just depends on the positioning of the ball and the striker, I'd say it's most likely when a cross is high, and just behind the striker. But it's random, and 8/10 times I'd prefer the striker to head it.

But at least it's not as frustrating as when there's a low cross perfect for a volley, and your striker stopps to softly head it at the keeper - even from the edge of the box!!!
