The key is simply passing.
I am a winger and I scored two goals in a match but only made 4 passes. Rating = 6.5.
My two other team mates achieved more completed passes than me, minimum 12. Rating = 7.5. They did not score any goals.
I have also noticed that the more passes I make during a game, the higher my rating.
To check the amount of passes, once you finish a game, press down once and select into match details, then select rating, then select your players name. It will come up with interesting stats like how far you have dribbled with the ball. The amount of passes is in this format: x(x). The x inside the bracket shows how many completed passes you have performed. Obviously you need to make sure you have more than 3/4 of the total passes you have made completed. E.g. 15(13). I assume the higher amount of completed passes compared to total passes also affects your rating.
Oh yeah, and to top it all off, the score was 2-0 and I didn't even get man of the match...
