How To Create Pixel-Badges

In order to create these badges, you will need a few things:

  1. A picture of the badge (higher quality the better)
  2. Photoshop (not essential but very, very useful)
  3. Paint
  4. A print-screen button

Ok, let's start. For my walkthrough, I'm going to use my home town badge - Cardiff City.

You will need to save the image to your computer or just copy it. Now open up Photoshop and get your picture up.

Ok, good so far. Now we need to get the image down to a size that will fit comfortably in the badge creator on PES. We will use 64 x 64 pixels. So go to 'Image' in the menu-bar along the top, and 'Image Size'. Then change it to 64 by 64 pixels.

You will need to untick the 'Constrain Porportions' box or else it may not end up as a square (which is what we need).

Save the new smaller image and open it up in paint.

Now on the menu-bar at the top go to 'View' > 'Zoom' > 'Custom'.

The more you zoom in the easier it is to work with, so we will use 800% for this.

You can already seem that the picture now just consists of fairly large pixels in a 64 x 64 grid. However, this alone would be very hard to work with, so we will need to add a grid over this.

This should produce this effect:

Now we are getting somewhere! However, the grid doesn't stay on the picture - if you adjust the size or try to print it will not be there. So, with the enlarged gridded version of the badge still showing, press 'Print Screen' to copy what is visible, and paste this into a new paint document. You can then cut out the image:

out of the badge, paste that again into a new paint file and save it. The finished result should look like:

As you can see there is a lot of colour and detail on these versions, and may be quite difficult to copy directly onto the game. So use your common sense and work out which colours to use and where to use them. Also, I said Photoshop is not essential. I only use it to accurately re-size the image, but if you feel capable of doing that in Paint then by all means go for it!

And that's it! Having used some of these they look very good in-game! So go out and get creating!

Here's a few more examples:

Swansea City. The writing underneath may look unusual close up, but when it is in-game it is not as noticeable.

Premiership new boys Reading.

Newcastle United.

Making Them Easier To Create

As you can see, the grids are very complex, with many shades of many colours involved. To make each of these in the game would not only be pain-staking but pointless. Instead, we will use colour substitution. This is replacing the large sections of many shades with just one shade.

An example of this is my Brazil logo:

If you compare it with the badges above, you will see how much easier this would be to re-create.

To do this, simply scan over the enlarged grid and see where one shades of a colour would be sufficient. To do this, I will use the Argentina logo:

As described earlier, there are many shades of the 3 main colours used (gold, green and blue) - particularly where they meet. So on the picture substitute all of the blue for one shades of blue, all the gold for one shade of gold etc. Here is the flag half-way through:

As you can see, it is not as detailed but much easier to put into the game! When it shows up in-game though the detail is not essential.

Tip - often when 2 colours meet it is hard to see whether to use one colour or the other. If this is the case squint at the screen. The colour choice should be more obvious now!

And that's it! It's easy to do and (if your sad like me) quite enjoying if you like a challenge.

Have fun!

Great guide man, makes it much easier (although still a long process) to create a great looking badge.
