How to defend L1 goals in the beginning

Ok so simple question. I got scored on by simple L1 lob goals in the beginning of halves.

It is annoying because you cannot switch to your defenders fast enough when it is a long lob towards your penalty area.

Any tips?

when they have kick off, select one of your midfielders and instantly start to run him back towards your goal keeper. Keep an eye on what they do with the ball as well as the radar. Dont run your selected player too far behind your defence (offside reasons). when they launch that L1 Triangle you will already have control of that midfielder, press square and wait!!! You should clear it easily.

If i forget to do this, the second they play the lofted through ball, hold triangle and hope your GK can rush out of his area and head the ball clear. For this reason i buy a GK with good acceleration, height and top speed.

I do this with semi-assisted cursor control selected.
Also having a low defensive line will counter this.

Hey gunner thanks for the tip. I hope they improve the cursor business next year. I'll give this a try.

a tactic i've found useful is to simply sprint towards the guy who first recieves it and is ready to play the through ball and slide tackle him. If you do this at the same time as performing an offside trap you will be covered just incase you dont get to him in time

yep - each situation is different, i did the slide tackle thing with berbatov earlier, he wiped the opponent out got up, collected the ball and was clean through, i scored and laughed my arse off ;)

I havent had this problem, does it happen a lot? or is this against human opposition?

This has happened to me a lot, although percentage wise luckily not so many people do it. I've had maybe 30 or 40 games where the opponent would constantly try the long ball from kick off. At first you are hopeless like the OP mentions as even by the time you have the right player selected, they're facing/moving the wrong way and will get beaten in a sprint, especially against fast players like Ronaldo and Messi.

But the best solution is to just run straight towards your own goal as soon as he kicks off, like someone already mentioned. This way you will intercept that ball just about all the time (I've never conceded since adapting that counter move).

This is such a cheap kick off! You wonder why the people that do this every time bother playing football games!

maybe because its a tactic which makes you score a goal.. I personally always try a 1-2 with one of my wingers straight from kick-off.. Sometimes it works.. Most of the times not.. but if you've discovered a way to score a goal straight from kick off by yourself (which i did), why wouldnt you try? If the defence responds properly you also know how good your opponent is so you know how much risk you can take in the rest of the match..

I don't mind them lofting over a chipped through ball from kick off every time really because it gives me the ball back straight away!

I'm the same as you, I pass it straight out to one of my wingers from kick off (whichever one is marked the least depending on my opponents formation).

Why wouldn't you do it you ask? Maybe because it's a disgustingly cheap tactic? Maybe because people want to play realistic and have good matches, rather than the same old pathetic attempt at getting a skanky goal?

Funny thing is that a lot of the people who do it have world class squads with Ronaldo, Messi etc. They have a world class squad and still they have to play cheap tactics, which pretty much shows they're not too good.

well im not one of those players with a world class squad, and i am also not aiming to get one, i like to pick the players i like and thats very certainly not c ronaldo and co... I also like to play realistic matches like you, but apart from that i like to give the 'cheap tactic' a try once a game, sometimes more often but that depends on how many goals i concede ;).. But i know my 'tactic' is quite easy to defend if you stay alert, so if you've conceded cheap goals like this maybe you should question your own skills.....

its easy to defend against, as soon as they loft the ball forward bring your keeper out and he will head or kick the ball away, for me the worst tactic is where someone just keeps booting the ball all the way up the pitch to the superfast wingers or strikers who are on a counter attack cos the defending AI hasnt recognised the problem it has caused. you can always see who these players are afterwards cos they have about 40% possesion and 10 shots at goal.

Stop acting like fucking children and play football for christs sake.
