I turn the difficulty up a notch and I cant score at all. Things that never happen down a notch happen all the time now.

1. all the computer does is boot the ball all the way down the field when they get the ball in their third, almost all the time.

2. the computer makes perfect tackles, even when they make a tackle, they knock the ball right to one of their teammates...this happens like 1/20 for me

3. you get tacked, destroyed even, you expect a card and dont even get a call

4. passing gets impossible, the higher the difficulty, the more your players just stand there like cardboard cutouts and expect the ball, even if i tell them to run to it after i pass it. i shouldnt have to do 'super duper cancel' mode all the time.

my hats off to those of you that are like '5* is easy, i go undefeated on 4*'. i dont know what you do, but im not getting there...all the nit picky things about the game...that have been there forever, just continue to stand out even more as you hit the higher difficulties.

*goes back down a difficulty level*

Don't worry about it. Once you crack it, it'll be fine. Maybe try practicing with unfair conditions and gradually make it harder for yourself.

5* friendly matches. Set your team to have red form arrows and give the opposition the down white/gray arrows. You should win that one. Then improve their arrows when you think you can cope with it.

My hardest match was when I tried playing 5* with China on the down gray arrows against Holland on red arrows. I managed to win 1-0 but it was quite tough. It should have been 2 :p

As well as adjusting the arrows, you could change the teams too. Play as France and to start with, pick a lowly team like China and build it up. I think using the Wide camera angle makes it easier to see the play and players and to anticipate actions quicker. Good luck. :)

I totally agree with you mate. I dont get it!!! I'm not ashamed to admit I play on 2 stars. I have tried so many times to go up to 3 and even 4 stars (as some people say 4 is easier than 3) and I find it's not so much the AI improves, but somehow your passes are no longer accurate. My gripe is that it's very annoying when your shots are suddenly affected like that. I play PES3 for the long distance shots at goal, so I stick with 2 stars so that I can even get a chance on goal. I am sure people playing on 4 or 5 are settling for short range goals more (not all, but the majority of them).
But yeah, I'm just being honest in saying that not only does the AI improve (I dont mind that), but the cpu stuffs up your shots and so on..

Sorry, but Practice makes perfect!
Its funny to see a moderator how knows everything about editing but with playing PES3 he have some difficulties.
But in the beginning I was also shit at PES, but really practise makes perfect.
I know this is a witty post, but I just wanna say that practise makes perfect is indeed true!

Cheers

I think if you go 5*'s right from the start when you get the game you get used to it pretty quick,

bit late to tell you this now I know, but an idea for when PES4 comes out

I usually set most games to hardest level right from the start, to get the most out of them, there's nothing worse than paying eur60/£50 for a game and finishing it in 2 days.

im still on 3/4* as well.

i was the same on pes2 but when me and my mate played on the same team against the ps2 on 5*, we would win easily.

maybe he just carried me lol

I totally agree with Zygalski, don't think any of u guys can find a worse team than China, take Zygalski's suggestion and use China 5* for say 10-20 matches, initially you will difinitely get irritated and want to kill the whole China team -:)

but surprise comes afterwards, ie use another team say Japan, u will find ur skills improved tremendously. good luck.

thx all

what i dont like is when you are progressing up the field with your midfielders and they...at times, catch up to and pass your forwards

your forwards should be running up and staying ahead of you

i really wish they wouldnt stand around so much and would make more runs

Give them attack arrows. You can give each player 2 different directions where they should make runs to.

thats the most annoying thing i have as well, sometimes they even get in the way of my midfielders and then the ball bounces off to the other team... very frutrating.

maybe we should play fifa with the off the ball control  !!!! ;) heh. or not

the best way to combat it is to pass it out wide, for some reason they seem to run forward then.

try that

haha.......a moderator that cant play on 5 stars.........thats lamer than a 3 legged dog taking a crap on a frozen lake(hehe just kidding).......I play on 5 stars and ive won everything. My tips.

Keep possession as in real football.

Dont always attack, if u dont have an opening pass it around/back until there is one.

Dont use slide tackles too much , use press when defending (i.e. get two guys to pressure their player in posession)

Use your wingers, pump in a lot of crosses.

If you are 1 or 2 up and there is only 10 - 15 mins change to defensive formation and play counterattacking as the comp throws everything in attack.

Also dont try too many fancy flicks and tricks , just stick to keeping possession and youll be AOK.

Take most of the boasters with a pinch of salt.

Some of the best advice I've had here was to use a few games solely to work on holding possession - getting used to how you can use the shoulder buttons to best effect.

L1, the slowest speed with the closest control for tight turns;

R2 to pick up pace and move into space, then combine it with dragging the Left stick diagonally to give you a side-step;

R1 for a sprint, and then hold R1+R2 and drag the Left stick diagonal to your run to knock the ball ahead and super-sprint after it.

Then try adding some first-time passing and 1-2's to your repetoire (Do look at the Beginners Guide in Training Section)

Try using the first part of the 1-2 (L1 + X) for the passing player to run on expecting the return, drawing defenders away from the player who received the pass, who then has more space.

Try to draw opposing MF and DF's out of postion to tackle you, then release a pass to a team-mate they were previously marking, and you can start to disrupt their formation.

I went through a slump in form after trying to step up from 3 to 4*, couldn't even seem to recover by switching back down. So I changed Camera Type from 'Normal-Long' to 'Normal-Intermediate' for a few games, giving me closer look at the players. Try going to Normal-Close for a few sessions in Training, to see in detail how the ball and players move, working through all the moves you know, and just trying variations to see what can happen.

The most important thing I've changed in playing style was when I switched from two index fingers, each covering two buttons on either side of the controller, to using one on the left and two on the right: index finger on R1 and second one to control R2. This meant I could instantly move from one dribbling style to another, or easily alternate and combine them.

It also meant I was able to use the super-sprint (R1+R2 + diagonal). It's especially useful for powering past opposing MF's and into space out wide and then get crosses in early, before the defence has had chance to adjust. I couldn't believe something as mundane as the way you hold the controller could make such a difference to playing potetial.

I'm now very comfortable on 4*, and 'competitive' on 5*. It's well worth trying to 'break-down' the elements of your own style - to try and ditch some reflex habits and to see how you can integrate new moves into that style, not just as individual 'tricks'.

I think the thing with 5* is that PES changes from being a game to being a real football simulator, so you have to actually play much more sensibly and with greater discipline and patience.

The jump from 3-4* is the biggest though. I think certain things about 5* do make it slightly more UNREALISTIC. The ref strictness, lack of space, other things that have been talked through already....Clearly this has to be done though and this is where the game is not so much a simulation. Just look at the next La Liga game. Backing-off by defenders, space in your own half etc.
