Improvement for me is key, what makes you buy the new game?

As the title says, Improvement on last years installment, is key to me buying the "newer one"

I mentioned this in another thread, it would be interesting to get the community's thoughts on this....

I for one buy PES over FIFA, because at least PES tries to change and be different every year. FIFA and EA Sports on the other hand, re-hash, re-polish and occasionally bring back old features for "new" installments. Improvement really is bare minimum across the range of sports games it releases.

Is the developer name and reputation enough to make you want to buy the game?

What reasons (if you have any) do you have when you buy a game?

The only game(s) from a developer that I will buy based on its reputation are Rockstar games, however I was not too keen on RDR...which unfortunately was one of the reasons I did not get LA Noir. GTA though for me is a must from that developer, in this case reputation makes me buy that game/series.

I will also buy a game if friends & family highly recommend it.

Examples of games that don't really improve enough for me are especially EA Sports games - Tiger Woods is a game that sticks out to me like a sore thumb, just as much as FIFA...amongst others.

I think the way PES and FIFA play is so different, once you're into one of them it's hard to not just blindly stick to that line. That's what alot of people seem to do. There aren't many games I buy or look forward to. I tend to stick to franchises I know, i.e. PES, GTA, Gran Turismo, Fight Night.

But you're right about EA. They are the laziest developers going. They seem to think that, just because most of their games are graphically impressive, that they can get away with doing sod all work on the gameplay mechanics themselves.

But to be honest, I'm more concerned about you being located in Wolverhampton and being a Liverpool supporter...

I think EA's other titles get better every year (never played FIFA) - Madden and NHL, particulalry NHL always improve despite complaints as they will never be perfect. Madden is an auto-buy, but then again EA has he monopoly on the NFL which should be illegal. NHL is a game I don't feel needs to be purchased every year - I typically skip a few years but I think they have done so good with that franchise that I don't even review 2Ksports hockey version anymore; I go directly to EA for my hockey. I would agree with you about Tiger Woods - I think there is a cap on how good you can make a golf game anyway - some of the old 1990 games are just as good.

Despite the hardcore game play that I know developers work hard at, I am shocked how small mistakes propogate through many versions of a series. E.g., EA has never rid of the wrong team celebrating a good play in Madden. I score a TD and I see the opposing team head coach jumping for joy. That has been going on for 5 years at least. Small buy annoying mistake.

The bottom line is that other than NHL and Madden I spend many hours reading posts like those on this board before I buy anything. I think most of us do rely on recommendations anymore - and as good example is the fact the traffic video game review sites receive and there is actually a cable channel devoted to it - or at least they used to be devoted to it (you hearing me G4)

Ask my Uncle that question mate, he would be classed as a glory hunter when he supported them.

However I was born into it, knowing absolutely know different because of him. Of course, I keep an eye on the Gold n Black being my home town team and all, and yes, I'll have you know, I have been to a few games at the Moli also. (Ohhhhhh shock horror!!!)

But I'm sorry I offended you, I'm a very proud Liverpool fan who happens to live in Wolverhampton.

Try telling that to Luis Suarez, Kenny Dalglish, George Elokobi, Mick Mccarthy etc

It dont matter where you are from at all, its where the heart is that matters mate.

The fact that a goal can come out of nowhere and when you score, it gives you that awesome feeling.

PES makes me angry for all the missed shots and sometimes retarded nature of the AI, but it's unpredictable in it's nature which means anything is possible. That's what keep's me going back to PES.

Also, the fact that I can edit a lot to keep up with the times is awesome. I know this is the same in FIFA but I just HATE EA for being lazy and greedy.

I disagree about licenses all together, licenses are a visual feature that does not in any way shape or form effect core game play.

FIFA might look the bizz regards kits, but it certainly does not play like football, or look good graphically.

The very fact that EA seem to claim simulation solely for hogging all the licenses (on purpose to prevent competition) is very very BS.

It just is.

i will buy from whoever give smoother gameplay and so far looking at videos and knowing FIFA history on gameplay looks like FIFA is the winner.

I'm not a fan of any, i will buy the one that i will most likely play the most. Last year i bought them both but this year i'm only buying one due to financial difficulties.

1. That is already on the game really, if you play on Top Player you get an OK challenge from the CPU, if you play against Barcelona and Arsenal in particular, you get a right battle. I would like the unlockable 6 star difficulty of old though.

2.Disagree, I'm still playing ML on PES 2011 now and still enjoying it.

I try not to play online because online has become a joke on most games now.

I will buy (preorder) the next game because of the improvement to gameplay that Konami has shown in recent videos, such as teammate control, improved AI (especially the fact that my team mates will now actually run into position on the wings without me having to manipulate their behaviour through the team tactics - I never used the tactics settings much in the past, but I had to in this iteration to make my teams game flow), new dribling control (give me simple but effective), dummy runs, set piece off the ball control etc. I think all the changes they're showing are great additions to an already great game and I believe it will increase the joy i get out of playing the game, which is ultimately the goal.

I didn't buy PES 2009 & 2010 because I played it and thought that they had gotten to far away from the gameplay flow of the old PS and PS2 games of the series (I also think that the PS2 version of PES 2009 played significantly better than the next gen version of the same game...). But I bought 2011 after having read reviews saying that gameplay had significantly improved and after having played the FIFA 11 and PES 2011 demos A LOT for AB testing - and I'm glad I did because I thoroughly enjoy PES 2011. But I do think it could use improvement in certain areas, and it looks like Konami are delivering in this regard.

I've have never been a big fan of FIFA, although I think 2011 was the best one yet (having played both demo and full game exstensively). The gameplay just doesn't seem as realistic as in PES 2011. And I don't get that individual feeling of every player in FIFA like I do in PES. Every player seems to feel the same in FIFA...

Anyway, I hope there will be demos of the two games like last year so I can pit the two games against each other again. That was what really did it for me last year, having come really close to buying FIFA but never having regretted that I went for PES 2011.

I disagree, the AI in 2011 was very beatable on Top Player, I was beating Real Madrid and Inter Milan with a team still half made up of originals. I should have had virtually no chance but I was comfortable throughout.

I've pre-ordered PES for the last few years or so but this is the first year I'm going to bide my time and choose either Fifa or PES based on the demos.

I'm fed up of loving PES at first and then finding loads of infuriating bugs e.g. this years sliding tackle bug! Catch-up bug...etc.

I really don't want to buy Fifa cos I hate EA but if I prefer the Fifa 12 demo then I'm going to give it a try this year. I still think I'll stick with PES if they've got rid of the above bugs though. The PES 2012 gameplay videos are looking really promising!
