Recently, user weleh asked about playing PES 2008 on a LAN. I answered it wasn't possible, but user ApoKalypse replied that he should visit pesmagazine.net and download the online launcher v5.
My curiosity stinged, I visited the page and found a small application that claims to provide IP peer-to-peer connectivity to play the game (you have to register in order to download it). I've even reinstalled PES 2008 to try it, but I'm yet to find a willing opponent.
The application, which requires PES patch 1.2 installed, indeed allows you to bypass Konami's official servers, and can be used with or without Hamachi to play over the internet or a LAN via IP.
I post this here since this is very, very good news, and I hadn't seen a topic about it yet. Perhaps bypassing the official servers can improve performance? I advise you to try it out. Anyone close to South America interested in a little match?
