I bought PES3 a little while back and started on level 2 and was winning every game so I could get my points 13k of points for all the transfers etc.

Only problem is now I am on level 3 I am losing every game 1 or 2 Nill. I'm not getting overawed by the other teams just cant seem to get anywhere !

Can anybody give me some advice please. I have trained some youngsters and have 2 pretty good forwards in Pilniak and Dunnant. But still cant seem to score.

Any advice on what strategies to use, what moves work well how many players to train at a time, who they should be and what to train them on would be greatly recieved.

I'm probably going to restart the ML tonight so any replies before then would be a bonus.
I bought 5 youth players last season and had to sell some first teamers just to survive the season I was that bad !

The differnece between 2* and 3*is mostly the time/space the opposition will allow you.

Try holding possession for longer stretches, moving the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, probing for a gap.

Get used to 1-2's (try the Beginner's Lesson) to create space for a player receiving the ball.

Switching smoothly between the various dribble speeds - L1 (slow), R2 (medium fast), R1 (sprint) and R1+R2 (super sprint) will help. And knowing where and when to use them - e.g. move into space using L1 for a tight-turn or R2 for a side-step; then R1+R2 will take you clear of the defender - this works more often when running wide, the Centre-backs will close you down in the middle.

Try setting up the angles to make first-time shots with your strikers; headers from in-swinging corners?

What are your possession and shots to goals stats like?

Hi rdouglas.

What you definetly don't want to do is to keep your finger on the R1, as you get speed but compromise your ball control.

Secondly, it depends on which camera you play. I think that most people play on normal-long but you should try wide for starters (especially if you have a big screen TV) which will help you to know where is everyone.

A strategy tip - try the classic diamond 4-4-2 and use the formation setting to edit the exact position of your Midfielders - it tends to help if you somewhat screw that diamond up, and then you have to remember where are they relatively - it will help you get good passes in mid field.

Last tip - like the rear view mirror in driving - check out the scanner from time to time.

I guess I'm gonna have to RTFM with regards to special moves and 1-2's etc

Where is this beginners lesson? I dont think I have seen it before.

Posession is normally between 48 - 55% but I dont normally get many shots :-(

My tactic was to train 2 forwards up and have them on the wings sprinting down and crossing in - just couldnt finish the moves.

Must admit I have started using the scanner when I want to sprint, but I take on board your views about spicing it up a bit.

What does "RTFM" mean?

Which camera angle do you use?
I'd recommend Default Long or Wide.

Make sure you have mastered 2* before you move on to 3*.
The way I mastered each level was to make sure I could win the International Cup using England - you can choose your own team. After I could do this easily, as well as after having given myself the better teams to play against, I tried to win it with Wales. Since then, I've won the Cup on 5* with Wales.

Make sure you know about the form arrows and what they mean. They are explained in the General section here.

RTFM = Read The F*cking Manual.
I think I had mastered Level 2. Had won div 1 & 2 and a few cups in my first 2 seasons. Got the general gist of the form arrows - red being hot down to pink being time to retire.
Guess I just need to keep plugging away at it!

I play a 3-5-2, that way you effectively have 4 atacking players, 2 behind your strikers, See below. I've mastered corners so when running down the wing, even if a defender is near by, double tap 'O' and if the ball doesn't go into the box, it will probably come off a defender for aa corner! If you can create corners and score 3 out of 5 then that helps...

The manual's not that hot, I think it leaves out a lot that you'll find on the guides that PES Insight have on their main page.

I never found the Beginner's Lesson for ages. From the main menu, select the Training menu, it's towards the bottom of the list. It offers quick routines for various aspects of the game (passing, 1-2's, screening attackers, dribbling, setting up shots and putting them away). It helps make it clear what PES3 and your PS2 expect you to do.

Your possession stats look okay, but if you rely on CF's to to put crosses in, it will be difficult to get more than one or two players in the area to finish them off. I'd try to get the SMF to do more of that work out wide, or look for them to cut inside and slide a pass into the CF - he may be able to shoot first time, or turn it inside again for his CF partner or an OMF player joining the attack.

I only occasionally glance at the scanner (for directing goal-kicks and crosses), but tend to rely on playing a consistant shape where I know who I want to carry the ball out of defence - and where their team mates should be around them - then look for short passes in midfield to find space to create a chance.

I was getting very frustrated with my own lack of shots compared to possession recently. To diagnose the problems, I tried taking a closer look at my players by switching temporarily from the Default - Long camara angle to Default - Normal. It forced me to lay off long passes and consentrate on short inter-passing (including 1-2's) and quick-turns or side-steps to win space on the ball.

That led me to change how I was holding the controller. I had been using just two index fingers for all four shoulder buttons, but found I could switch pace more easily by using first and second fingers for R1 and R2 (and one for L1 on the other side). It was a bit chaotic for a few practice games but I think the abilty to change pace, side-step and turn tight more quickly helped me to hold more possession, dictate the direction of attacks, and create more chances.

That'd be good against the computer but you'd be left totally exposed against a human player. I used to play with three at the back and two defensive mids but found that my mate just ran down the line every time.

I've gone to 4-2-2-2 now (4 DF, 2DMF, 2AMF, 2CF oh and a GK :))

Beat him 8-1 twice last night on half hour games. I think it's working ;)

Changing the level of attack/defense with R1,R2 + button, or via quick settings, makes a HUGE difference to your attacking options. Brush up your defence so you're more able to cope with being a little more exposed at the back, and go all-out attack. You can't fail to score with 8-9 of your outfielders in and around the penalty area.

I think 2DMFs with 1 OMF is a more solid formation.

I agree, it seems the best balance of attack and defence, at least within a 3-5-2 formation.

It's ideal for sitting on top of teams, camping in their half, passing the ball to and fro looking for a gap. I set one DMF's attack arrows forward to get him to join the attack.

The other holds, offering a screen against the break, and a simple 'out-ball' if one of my attackers or attacking midfielders finds themselves blocked and running into trouble.

I know this might sound stupid but try 5*. I was getting beat alot on 3* and out of interest swiched to 5*. I found it easy in a lot of respects. I could actually score a goal with the default team! :) The only thing to be concerned about it giving away chances - they will punish you at every oportunity.

I agree with Zygalski - 2 DMF for a 3-5-2.

Just started ML on 5* and don't find it too hard either!
Just beat Newcastle 4-1 with a couple of nice Rivaldo goals after the keeper had fumbled the first attempts by my CF's.

That's what I like about the 3-5-2. If you get a deflection, you should have 2 attacking MF's behind to clear up the mess!!

The hardest thing about 5* is disposessing the ball from other team and then keeping posession is much harder than before.
