Well 2003 is drawing to a close.

Have procrastinated for months, I have finally written a letter to Konami.
Suggestions for Winning Eleven 8

Hi Joanne,

I have been playing Winning Eleven for about a year now and the game is really fantastic. The AI is mind boggling, almost like having a life of their own. The improvements seen year after year are amazing.

I have several suggestions which I hope will take the game to an even greater heights.

1.Media Reports- eg.tabloid and/or newsroom reporting the football results. Since WE has the stats of each player’s performance at the end of each game, it would not be too difficult to report the entire team’s performance. However the report should be based on the team that one has chosen to play with. For eg. if I have selected Brazil and played a real boring game and won, the report should say something like Brazil win 1-0 in a lack lustre game. OR if I have played well and won 5-1, I should expect the headlines to read as Brazil steamrolled S.Korea 5-1. You can have all kind of moral boosting exaggerated/sarcastic headlines preprogrammed into the game. If we pick a very strong team such as Brazil or France and lost to a minnow, we should expect some kind of bashing from the press eg. French fried by Saudi Arabia or if Italy got bundled out of a tournament, “ National disaster- Italy bite the dust”. Also it would be great if we scored a hattrick, have the player name mentioned on the report, I mean how often can a player score a hattrick. There is so many things you can do with the media. Eg reporting on any big name transfer, player injured/suspended etc. Please work on this line.

2.Penalties- Notice from WE7 that the penalty challenge is extremely easy. Just by merely pressing the square button with the directional button down, has 95% chances of scoring. On the contrary, by pressing the directional button left or right, has a lower percentage chance of scoring. The anomaly was due to the fact that the Keeper will not remain stationary. He will either jump left or right 95% of the time and only 5% will he remains stationary. Thus one can beat the CPU on penalties literally with our eyes closed.

Suggestion:

a)The force of the kick should be aligned with the pressure we apply on the directional button.

b) Player should be moved/aligned to/at the penalty spot before the kick is taken. The force of the kick will be determined by both the pressure and his body alignment. By so doing, at least the keeper still have a chance of saving any direct shot with his legs should he dived at the wrong side.

2.Replay

Have 20sec of reply action once ball goes out of play. Currently it does not make sense to pause the game just before the

ball goes out of play just to see replay.

3. International Teams

More teams should be added to add more variety and fun to the game.

Asia Oceanic to include

1.Kuwait

2.Qatar

3.North Korea

4.New Zealand

5. Iraq

6. Israel

American Cup

1.Honduras

2.Canada

3 Bolivia

4. Venezuela

European Cup

1. Latvia

2. Estonia

3. Iceland

African Cup

1. Ghana

2. Zimbabwe

3. Zambia

4. Zaire

5. Congo

4. Weather Conditions

1. Winter- allow players to put on gloves

2. Winter-Breath with vapour on Zoom

3. Winter-Snowfakes during game, snow on tarmac and rooftops

4. Raining-Fans carrying umbrella, some with raincoats, water dripping from rooftops, occasional thunder and lightning.

5. Hot weather-player swiping away the sweat

6. Raining-shorts and jerseys smudged with mud

7. Raining- water to spurt with specks of flying mud during sliding

8. Changing weather during the game- eg. raining and suddenly sunny or vice versa

5. Handball

Currently the handball is not realistic as it is not universally applied. It happens more to attackers rather than to defenders(practically none when defending at the goalmouth area). Since we have no control of the players’ hands and all incidents are unintentional, best that it is used at a smaller scale and in obvious situation. Eg. during a goal mouth scramble or when the keeper has been beaten, palming the ball away when it is not possible to head.

6. Dribbling moves

With perfect timing or luck, allow us to perform the move( eg. by pressing L2) where we can just poke the ball between the legs of a player and collect it on the other side or the keeper for goal.

7. Head collision

The game will definitely be more exciting with occasional head collision due to mistiming. While clutching the head, allow blood to trickle before applying the head bandage. Would prefer head bandage that does not cover all the hair.

8. Balls

Include all the World Cup balls since its inauguration.

9. Sound Effects

The sound effects should be simulated as if in a stadium environment. Currently it is hardly audible when the player boots the ball upfield unlike in real life. Whether it is two heads banging together, jostling or a crunching tackle, emphasize the sound like in real life. To add more life to the game, allow player to shriek in pain upon a thunderous contact.

10. Referee/Linesman

Allow the referee/linesman to be on the pitch.Ref’s name should be displayed. Allow player to protest with all kinds of _expression on any dubious decision. However Ref’s decision will be final.

11. Points

Use currency instead of points as professionalism equals $$$$$. It is more contemporary and logical. No one gets bankrupt on points.

12. Players’ Rating

Show rating of players during half time. At least we know who to substitute.

13. Jeers and Boos

Fans should cheer star player based on their rating performance in the midst of the game, if they are playing well they get cheers and if they are playing badly jeers and boos.

14. Grand Opening Ceremony and Closing ceremony

Lots and lots of celebration, with fireworks, crackers, colored ballons, pom pom girls etc. With advanced computer graphics and state of the art technology, anything is possible and easier to implement than in real life. National flags of countries participating in an International tourney should be hoisted up within the vicinity of the stadium or best on top of the stadium for all to see. As each country makes their exit, their national flag will be taken down accordingly leaving on two for the final.

15. More realistic polygons

People standing near the sidelines looks so artificial. It is like a character cut out from a cardboard watching the game without any life or movement. Notwithstanding our desire to see some more novel game moves , I think this is one area, Konami should spent more effort on in improving the action/aesthetics outside the pitch. Create more life with managers at the dug out running to the sideline swearing with his hands at the ref for a controversial decision. Reserves warming up at the tarmac. Cameraman moving their camera to catch the action. Managers/Coaching staff gesturing/jumping in response to a goal or a miss.

16. Team shuffling in the Master League

Do not prefix the teams in the Master League as it will only make things rigid. By enabling us to reshuffle the teams will certainly add more variability and replayable value to the game.

17. Licences

It is really tortuous to change the names/faces of the players, clubs and kits year after year. It is also inconvenient to have the patch as a collectible . Being the best footie game for so many years, it is sad that many people are avoiding this game despite of its superlative gameplay as a result of the above predicament. If all the licences(player and team) are in place, I am sure sales will skyrocket and the proceeds will outweigh the additional cost involved.

18. Warm up

Before the ref blows to start the game, let us have a warm up perhaps for one minute on one side of the pitch with opponent on the other side.

19. Keeper Injury/Sending off

To add more realism to the game, subject keepers to injury/sending off for any nasty contact or challenge.

20.. Keeper moves

In WE7, we saw a novel moves where it is now possible for us to move the keeper out and with the directional button turn left or right inorder to confuse the striker (more like narrowing down the angle so that the striker has a lower

probability of scoring). How about implementing two new moves by using the same logic.

1. Jumping

2. Diving left or right

Thank You for this amazing game and keep up with the good work.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the staff in Konami.

Great effort cadburyho!!!
I would also like a substitution process, like when you substitute a player, he will be on the sidelines waiting for the replaced player to applaud the spectators, hug each other, then the new substitute comes on to the cheers of the crowd. Standing ovations would be great too for a player with 9-10 rating.

Thanks.

Your letter is great and all, I don`t wanna be rude or anything like it, but you really think KONAMI will listen to you.. ?? I mean, they have alot of people complaining about stuff and KONAMI don`t care. That is hopeless, but I like your points in the letter...that game would be great.

although the news paper headline thing wouldnt reaaly be worth implementing...and time could be spent better on tweaking the game engine and AI.

except for the newspaper stuff, i think thats all bloody good, pretty much adding more and more to making it like watching a real game on the tele. When you play the game you see how much of a difference realistic kits, balls, boards etc make, you can imagine the extra fun involved with seeing good AI, and realistic reactions to everything that can happen. E.g staying down for abit and getting up after a bad tackle that wasnt given, or running after the ref (who we need to see!) to appeal.players celebrating together and instantly reacting, not realy organised just sort of crazy elation, and not the current thing where one can run off on his own in a corner and noone joins him! More interaction between players, coaches, ref is needed, everyone is like an individual at the moment, fifa has got the idea now like with everyone surrounding the ref and getting to see subs and stuff.

How can you not slap them across the face with the need for 360 degree analog movement. Inexcusable for the best game in the sporting world to have only 8 directions. Damn near criminal.

Tell that to Joanne, or whatever her name is.

PEACE

Well we never know. They do get ideas from somewhere, don't they? After all, it does not cost them anything.

As long as we write in, there is always a hope however remote
you may think.

Anyway, I am in the midst of compiling a second part. Eg. On injury, it would be great if we can have estimate on how long a player will be out of action. At least we can plan ahead. And
On weather condition, it would be great if we could sense the wind. For eg. a sudden gust of wind will see bits of paper or a barrel rolling on the tarmac in the midst of the game. These are just examples that create an ambience as if we are in the stadium.

:D funny man.

hate to say it, but one of the things i liked about this years fifa was that the players never run perfectly straight like in pes. (incase anyone is wondering, ive forgotten what the other thing i liked was... lol :D)

i love most of the things uve put down on that list. im glad you agree about the gloves, ive mentioned that somewhere else. i also think u should be able to make players have their shirts tucked out, like henry and vieira do.

i love the idea of vapour in cold weather, and the mud on shirts. very pretty :)

me and mutu had the idea of sending off loads of pics of hairstyles to konami to try and influence their next game, cos they either think most europeans are bald, or find it funny to include 60 bald heads, 60 long haircuts, about 20 totally retarded ones, and then only 60 that are actually any good. its almost impossible to find one that looks anything like yours. in my case anyway.

could be... i would have thought the name would be more japaneese though! unless he has sent it to konami europe, but arent all the people in the credits japaneese?
