Page 29 of the English PES3 manual:
(In Edit Mode)
Position Settings:

Set the player's suitability for each position. If the player is suitable for multiple positions, the position listed under "Registered Position" will be displayed during matches.
If the player participates in a match at a position for which he is not suited, the player's abilities will suffer greatly.

I reckon that when playing a left-footer on the right, his crossing with his right foot will be worse than from his left foot. Same goes for his shooting unless you position him correctly so that his favoured foot takes the shot. We all know how good Giggs is with his right foot ;)

As the manual says, "If the player participates in a match at a position for which he is not suited, the player's abilities will suffer greatly."

I guess it could be similar to the effect of poor 'Form' arrows (blue, and purple), taking 6 or 12 pts of the players ratings in certain skills. Positioning, etc.

I wonder if there is any difference in there abilties in their preferred position, compared to the others that they're able to play. e.g. are Bergkamp and Larson better at CF than OMF?

I wouldn't have thought SMF players would be downgraded for playing on the opposite side from thier dominant foot - you'd just have to play them differently, cutting inside from midfield, or when up against the opposing full-back, but keeping width with wingers, or a CF or OMF with at least one Attack arrow pointing them to make runs out wide, into that channel. (like Henry does for Arsenal)

That's how I get Nedved (SMF) and Del Piero (OMF) into the same Juvé side, behind De Vaio and Trezeguet, though Nedved still has excellent Weak Foot accuracy anyway.

It's nice when you see them switch, especially when it leads to a goal.

I definitely said, "I guess...".

Mat,
I put Van der Saar up front for Netherlands and he actually did score twice!

Defenders mostly have better Keeper Skills than MF's and FW's.

f3n,
Why ruin the realism of immitating Houllier's bizarre tactics?

You could set Switch Sides as a Manual Strategy to get him and, say Diouf, to switch during games. I think that's what Mr. Houlier wants.

i tried and i find kewell dribbling on the right hand side seems 'weird' and not that lethal. diouf is just amazing he can play anywhere

I'm surprised nobody mentione Damian Duff (Chelsea, ireland). He may not be the most well-known, but this SOB has some serious acceleration and I find him to be the one of the best creative nuiances in the game when i play my friends.

I have done stepovers and moves with him that i cannot pull off with anyone else. Numerous times I have taken on 3 or 4 defenders with this guy by himself and left them in the dust. something magical about him.

oh and he has a cracking left foot.

ghazi, I guess you update Duff to be more realistic? There's not much chance of the default Duff of doing what you managed (well, maybe a couple of times but not regularly).

i updated duff.. and he is brilliant... his stats are not world class but he seems to play awesomely... everybody runs off him...

but i already have him as my OMF...

I have always tried to play left footers on the left and right footers on the right... mainly for crossing...

by default Duff is pretty ordinary.. unless edited. not that it matters but how they conjure up the stats? i dont think they use cm4 stats as a guideline?
