Not really any news on this other than you'll be able to transfer your save from ME1 and carry on with the same character in ME2 also the debut trailer came out today.

EA officially announces BioWare's follow-up to 2007 sci-fi action RPG for Microsoft platforms in early 2010.

That Electronic Arts and BioWare have been at work on a follow-up to 2007's Mass Effect hasn't exactly been a guarded secret. The term "Mass Effect trilogy" has been bandied about by EA brass since it acquired the studio in 2007, with CEO John Riccitiello most recently pegging the game for a multiplatform release in early 2010. Of course, that reveal was quickly followed by the game's first teaser trailer last month.

Now, a year on from when BioWare executive producer Greg Zeschuk made first reference to the game by its title, EA has officially announced Mass Effect 2. Tempering speculation that the game will see a multiplatform release on the PlayStation 3, EA confirmed it for release only on the Xbox 360 and PC in early 2010. The first installment in the franchise was published by Microsoft and debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2007 before moving to the PC last year.

BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka said that it will offer "intensified combat and expanded weapon options as well as increased depth of planet exploration." And, as is the hallmark of games produced by EA's subsidiary, BioWare promises a cinematic storyline that will play out in a fashion similar to the first game in the series.

Unfortunately, EA remains tight-lipped on Commander Shepard's latest mission, saying only that humanity now faces a threat greater than the robotic Geth army seen in the original. Indeed, Commander Shepard may not be party to the proceedings at all, considering that last month's trailer indicated humanity's first Spectre had been killed in action.

I think I might start the game again, maybe carrying over my old character so I can reach level 50. Also I neglected the majority of side-missions, so I'd have plenty to do.

Including keeping Wrex alive ;_;

I'm thinking of playing again as a female character which I tried immediately after finishing it but quite honestly gave up after about five minutes. That said, I wouldn't take the female character through into ME2 - if you even can - so not sure what point there is.

I may instead pick up my old character before the final mission and do some side-quests. In fact, why not just start over with a male character again....the game was good enough!

What abilities did you pick? I went for a combat-bio combination.

Hopefully the expanded exploration will allow for a touch more variety. Most planets consisted of the same, relatively dull search for minerals & the odd carbon copy base. Took some of the fun out of exploration. Other than that I loved the first one (thanks to Dan's advice to get it ;) ) and have been seriously looking forward to this.

As for the specialties, I went pure combat. Did mean I couldn't open some wreckage items but I though I'd do that on the 2nd playthrough. Started again with a new character but got sidetracked by newer titles. Still intend to play through it again at some point though...

I agree with that, little more variation. Often you'd search the entire planet with that retarded buggy only to find out you don't have enough skill to gather them :faceplm:

Odds are it's going to be fantastic.

Release date is January the 10th 2010 according to GAME, I'm guessing it was announced at the EA conference?

I've only started playing the first. I found it for a tenner in HMV and it always intrigued me, so I gave it a go. I'm not too far in it, at the moment. I've only completed about three of four primary tasks and probably more than double amount of side-missions and I'm in the Citadel. I'm probably spending too much time chatting to people. Whenever I'm wondering around the Citadel, I try to find as many people to talk to and learn about the game's world as much as I can.

I probably won't get this game on release date, but I'll be getting it.

EDIT: How long is the first Mass Effect? I have a feeling I'm miles off.

If you arrived at the Citadel for the first time and haven't left yet, then yeah, you've a way to go ;)

Crikey! I think I better knuckle down and concentrate more on bringing Saren down. At the moment, I'm on my way to take a second set of evidence to the Citadel Council. This will probably mean I'll be on my way out to my next destination.

Yeah recently started the first one as well. Had been putting of playing it because I felt that it was too big. Summer really is the perfect time to play it for me. Also Bioware has done a fantastic job in this one. I just hope that EA don't fuck the second one up.

Is it possible to go back to the side missions after completing the main story, like in GTA4? Or, does the main story determine everything else in the game?

You can't play after the final mission so make a save before doing it so you can carry on doing side missions, hopefully in ME2 you'll be able to carry on afterwards.

Out January 29th in Europe, 26th in the US. Expect a slight delay.

Gives me plenty of time to play the first one all over again as my saves were wiped when a hard drive died many months ago.

Long ago when the Mass Effect 2 was announced the creators ask us to keep the saves from Mass Effect cause it will influence the story but with the first trailer it looked like Sheppard was KIA and youll get to play a new character. I was like... how could the saves from Mass Effect affect the game if the main character from it died... Glad it turned out that Sheppards alive and we will get to play with him again.
