ML - How to enter European Masters/Champions Cup?

Well, so i'm in D1 League with my team in ML. I've been trying to find out how you enter European Masters Cup and European Champions Cup but I am just confused. What does it mean that you become "3rd in champions league", or "5th in group"? Can someone please clarify it?? Does it mean I purposely have to lose matches?? What matches?? Just regular fixtures, or D1 Cup matches?? Oh, and I'm ranked 3rd right now with Barcelona and Real Madrid ranked 1st/2nd. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Something like this (based on '08):

1st and 2nd in league go straight to EuroChamp group stage, 3rd through 6th in the league play in EC qualifying round group. 1st and 2nd in that group go to EC group stage, 3rd goes to EuroMasters. 1st and 2nd in EC group stage go to EC knockout round, 3rd and 4th drop down to the EM. D1 Cup winner is also automatically qualified for EM unless relegated, I believe.

You don't necessarily have to lose matches, but you do have to play for strategic draws and hope other teams in the group don't lose. Pretty lame.
