My Grievances with PES3

I love this game I really do, but my god are there some irritating flaws in it. I think its true that the little things eat at you the most!!

1. Why oh why oh WHY! do players constantly get pulled back for fouling when it is either SO obvious the ball was won or you accidentally touch someone?! To add insult to injury the referees are set so strict that they will book you for ANYTHING!! I was Italy and had Nesta on a yellow, the opponent broke into my box and there was Alessandro with the best last ditch tackle I have ever seen. Ball was won, player stumbled forward and I thought YES!! What did the ref do? Sent Nesta off and gave a penalty from which they won the game! The heat of the game I suppose, but when its so damn obvious it narks the f--k outta me!

2. Referees. As stated about the strictness. Ridiculous. There is no need to send a player off for the first tackle in a game unless its totally malicious. And as I've not seen a malicious foul in the game yet I wonder why the red keeps appearing. Bookings also appear for the slightest thing which p*sses me right off! I've laughed before now at players just dormantly wandering into an opponent only to hear the crowd scream for blood and waddya know? out pops the yellow?!!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

3. AI. My god is this piss poor or what?? Goal mouth scrambles happen in slow motion and usually end with the ball being cleared due to the fact that attackers dont throw themselves in there! Situations where you NEED a player to just stick his foot in to win the ball, HA! no chance! I think the AI is the biggest dissapointment especially compared to PES2 which was smooth and brilliant!

3. Running with the ball. How the HELL is it that every time you change direction when sprinting, the player in posession acts like he's on a f**king tight rope? I'm sorry but when I'm running with the likes of Fiore and he starts to capsize allowing some f*cking dinosaur like Phil Neville to win the ball I feel like crying!!

4. Shooting. Piss poor if your striker is below 90s. And with all if the bar goes above 2cm it goes into orbit anyway. Also the inability to curl one in the corner with the inside of your foot. I think I've only been able to do this with Del Piero, but as you have to press L1 to pull the move off, it usually balloons wide.

5. Advantage rule. Absolutely no relation to the game whatsoever. When it works its great but when it f*cks up and the other team picks up posession I find myself buying a new control pad. Needs sorting.

6. Penalties. Oh dear this is the biggest bag of shite ever. Hit and hope or what? I remember tapping the shoot button once to roll it down the middle, and where did it go? Row Z of course! I wouldn't mind but it was Totti not United's-Best-Defender-Heskey(HaHa!!) or someone like that!! The best penalty system ever was in Virtua Striker 2 and needs to be copied!

7. Animations. These seem to be limited, tackling especially. Seeing a defensive midfielder slide for about a centimetre and getting no where near the play is laughable. Or the other extreme of if the guy tackling is still on the floor and the attacker comes back on himself straight into his leg is definately comical (and yes I've been sent off for this too!).

8. A few other things like the ball hitting a brick wall not a net although its not as bad as Fifa.

Handball. No need for this silly rule. Its dosen't make the game more realistic just more irritating!

OFFSIDES!!!!!!! Argh! Why cant strikers watch the line and drop with the defenders in order to allow the ball to be pumped back in?? This happens EVERY time to me. Its due to poor AI again.

Keepers. Has anyone else noticed their keeper drop the ball after a save, glitch for several seconds (Virtua Striker 2 style) then pick it up? Poor AI yet again! (do they test these games or what?)

Why so few stadiums? Wheres the PS2 hard drive so we can save endless amounts of stadiums new graphics etc??

All in all I DO like this game but I feel that PES3 has taken a step back from PES2 in some respects but mainly its gone forward especially graphically!! ;)

Well, if KONAMI added everything in PES3 and made the game so perfect then they would be out of the business the next day. What I mean by this is, thats the way Konami makes money my friend, not just KONAMI every single game publisher. I'm sure all of the things you wrote down that you don't like will be corrected in future versions, PES4,5 etc.

All of those are true. Although I dont agree with the AI being worst than PES2. In PES2 I could really score no matter who was defending. Even in 5 stars. The AI was a disgrace. And the AI of the human team defense was ridiculous. The defender would run from the ball. But in PES3 what it really irritates me, is the way the computer almost every time win the aereal ball, and usually scores. I just cant clear it of with a header. And why is so damn dificult to steal the ball from the forwards controled by the computer? They are all super players. I really love in PES1 where it was so easy to defend agains any team. Even in two player mode. You really had to build a team work play and never depend on the batles of 1 on 1. The team shoul atack good. Not making them almost impossible to stop. Not always. But you can really say when the ball is in midlefield the computer is going to score. Its almosts like cheating. But all in all, its a brilliant game.

1 and 2 is ok, the Keeper and Handball argument also. The rest is very funny for me and I cannot agree with it, don´t wanna offend you mate, but especially "I think the AI is the biggest dissapointment especially compared to PES2 which was smooth and brilliant!" is ridicolous ;).
PES2 was the worst game of the series IMO, very arcady gameplay, even PES1 was better, all WE games also.

I beg to differ on a couple of points.

The first one being dribbling. I was having problem with PES2 and WE6 even at the 3* level but I do not face problem on the same level with PES3 or WE7.Depending on perfect timing and swerve, I have left many defenders trailing behind. The game is getting more realistic. In fact in PES3, the dribbling is the best of all footie that I have played. You should try Fifa 2004, dribbling is virtually impossible or non existent.

The second one being AI. The goalmouth scramble has never being dull or slow motion. It depends on your level of aggression.
I have never experienced a dull moment during a goal mouth melee. Soccer has never been that exciting.

I pretty much agree with cadburyho. I also have to say that I think that the advantage rule is great but the handball rule is pretty poor. What tangerine_machine said about the offside rule is slightly wrong in my opinion. I think this is done to make the game more realistic you can barely go 15mins in a real footy match without seeing an offside descision.

the worst is the handball, i always caught handball when i charge down goalkeepers, or when i control the ball at a dangerous position. it will happens at least 4times a game!

hmm yeh handballs is a bit ridiculous..in a 20 min game i average atleast 2-3 per game..in real life only maybe 1 or none will ever happen. Advantages happen when you dont need it..and when you do..the ref whistles. i think the defending can be improved for PES4..i had one defender miss a slide tackle on ronaldo at full speed..got back up..and caught back up to me...nearly impossible to steal the ball running with a player on the sideline..unless takling....AI is better then PES2..makes you work for goals, more rewarding when you create a goal, defending is tighter then PES2...everything else is remarkable about PES3...LUV THE GAME!

I agree with a few points, handballs for one, should have been left out and also the way you just cannot get the ball off the player running down the wing. You just stumble next to him to the byline unless you slide in on him.

Also when he gets to the byline they never do anything different, always cut back and cross, annoying and too robotic.

I think the game is a bit too TIGHT ! I was playing a game against my mate who has never played PES3 before, played PES2 a bit tho and there were hardly any chances in the game, he complained that it was much tighter than PES2 and I think I have to agree. I was playing Costa Rica with Brazil the other day, you would expect to run rings around their players but they were stealing the ball and tackling like they were the fricking Argies ! What is that all about ? A crap team on 5* should still be a crap team !

It is too hard to defend crosses into the box too, very much hit and miss and if the attacker is in front of the defender when the ball is crossed that is where he will stay, you can almost see it happening and a goal is going to come.

Also, the players STILL hesitate before attacking the ball, especially strikers, you almost want to kick them up the ass to get them to move towards the ball.

The shooting bar is a joke as was said in the first post, anywhere over 2cm and the ball goes over the bar, there has to be a better percentage to get the ball on target ! There HAS to be !

Also, TACKLING ! You can make an amazing FAIR tackle on a player (as said above) and you get a foul against you ! It is soooooo annoying ! You can just nick the ball with your toe, you think you made a great play and it gets penalised and usually a card as said before too, crazy !

One other thing which is really annoying is the way that defenders always catch up even the quickest players such as Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo ! How is that right ? They should be skinning the defenders and there is no way they should be caught once in open ground, doesn't happen in real life unless you got a VERY quick defender.

There are alot of good points about the game but there are also bad niggling points which spoil the experience a little. To be honest, I honestly do not think that PES has ever topped ISS Pro Evolution 2 on the PSX for sheer enjoyment value, never enjoyed a 2 player match on PES more than ISS Pro Evo 2.

I do love the game but it annoys the hell out of me, don't seem to be able to score many great goals and alot seem to be headers.

PES3/WE7 does have a few bad points but I think it is much better than any other footie game.

There are many more complaints about PES3 then there were for PES2 - which was easily the worst PES/ISS/WE game ever. How come?!

If I put my forwards on goal with a through ball, the defenders do gain on them but not enough to cause a problem. You have to consider who it is you're running with. Faster players usually don't get caught when I play. A change in direction or a little trick [the spin move maybe or a shot fake] - try the double tap forward (in the direction you're running to) and you shouldn't be caught.

I'm through one-on-one quite a few times each match. Lob the keeper? Round him? Nutmeg?(ok, rare but sometimes it does work).
Change of speed as well as direction works well. Stop with just R1 and hold up the play a bit.

5* difficulty should be a challenge to play, whatever the team is. PES2 Extreme mode scoreline of 13-0? No thanks. I'm scraping through in PES3 ML mode, sometimes with winning goals in the last 2 minutes. Winning 1-0 in ML with a goal in the 89th minute feels quite rewarding. Even if your star striker did hit the post 4 times! :p

If you play PES3 like you did PES2 - through ball then hold R1 in a hope to score, you will (and deserve to be) disappointed. Approach the game in a different way and it could be more rewarding.

I won ML Div 1 on goal difference. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Seeing some strange WEFA Cup (the champions league one) groups. One group had 2 Italian and 2 spanish teams in it. This doesn't look too good but in fifa, I read that the equivalent cup contained 3 English clubs in the same group!

I have to admit I have only played PES3 a bit. But 2 things struck me... the stooopid refs who blow up for nothing and the fact that there is still a problem with player select. Why is it a lot of the time you just cannot select the player nearest the ball??? No matter if it's on manual or auto it still makes no difference...

Makes me sick.

Totally agree with that point. ISS Pro Evolution 2 is the best football game in my opinion. While the PES series is very good, I don't feel they've ever topped this one. If you can ignore the ugly as hell graphics, it's a brilliant game. :D

Wait, I'm a little bit confused here. Is it me or the names you put are way off the line.

PES = Pro Evolution Soccer
ISS = International Superstar Soccer so why in the hell do you put ISS Pro Evo 2 ?
