My impressions

Hi guys,

So I just registered on these forums to share my demo impressions with you guys. First off, I've played Fifa my whole life. Basicly got every single copy of fifa since 2000. Since 2009 where I got my first Next-gen console I've always followed the new titles of fifa and pes. Fifa was always better for me because what mattered for me was proper animations and licenses. But since the reveal of Fifa 2012 and Pes 2012 I've realized how much PES improved from Pes 2011 while seeing that Fifa 2012 looks almost the same as 2011 I was deeply dissapointed.

In the end I realized that I couldn't play proper football with fifa. When I downloaded the demo of Pes 2012 I was so amazed! The presentation it self caught my eyes at first glimps. There are a lot of things that Fifa misses presentation wise. The entrances are far superior to Fifa's and the camera angle plus the lightings make the gameplay feel like real life.

Untill this day I've always thought that PES has had robotic animations. Now Konami has either got proper animations this time around or I'm just blind because I'm caught by the game. I swear that I can't go back to my fifa 11. I don't even know if this is a good thing.

There are lots of things that just looks spot on. But the most important one for me is the slow paced gameplay. It's wonderful to be able to build up your own chances. You have more time to make decisions where as in Fifa you'd barely have time to decide resulting you to constantly pass the ball forward.

As the good things are undescribable there are unfortunately some unpleasing stuff with the gameplay. The ball physics are not good enough. They are not terrible or anything but they could have been better. While you still can score from every single place which I highly appreciate because of fifa's scripted shooting system, the ball physics can look very awkward every now and then. Although mostly for passing. The player animations for long passes are just not right thus making it look very awkward when making long passes.

Another thing is the goalkeepers. I want to start mentioning that there are certain places where the goalkeepers are far more realistic than fifa's goalkeepers. The fact that goal keepers can parry in PES is awesome, but they do it very often. I know it can be very hard to balance it right, but I just hope they don't make a step back with the next demo seeing as they mentioned the GKs in their latest news. I think it is realistic that the goal keepers are more unreliable in this one because in fifa, when you make these canon shots the goal keeper will catch the ball which makes it look VERY unrealistic.

I don't wanna make this post very long although there is one more things I wanna point out. The AI is also superior to Fifa's AI. I like the AI so much in PES besides one thing. I find it very annoying to play against Milan in top player because they can just run past me everytime with their Robinho.

From the looks of the trailers the new game modes look promising. I can't wait to enjoy the Champions league with my Real Madrid :)

Agree/Disagree with what I've said, critize the points you disagreed with and lets have some nice discussions about the game. One I thing I'm just frightening is, if Konami will be making a step back with their 2nd demo upgrade.

I agree on almost all the points, and it's always nice to get a FIFA convert. FIFA always has the polish and sparkle, but after ten games things get very repetitive very fast. Once you can unlock the button combinations in certain areas of the pitch, the same goals are scored all the time. PES 2011 was brilliant and frustrating in the same breath. I caned that game and got the best out of it to an extent, but this game I'm really excited about. It has taken me around 100 games (and that's coming straight from PES2011) to 'get it'. The freedom of movement now is on another level. I can at last for example (not that I want to though as I hate Man Utd) give the ball to Rooney and drift in and out of areas with precision close control, using his bodyweight to get into tight areas and rifle a Rooney-esque shot. It pays to know your players. When I get one on one with Nani or Giggs, I know I'm in business. When I penetrate the defence with lovely ball I know Robinho will outpace the defence.

Working at your defence is an ART FORM. It is a game in itself on Top Player which starts right from the forwards and midfield. Jump in at your peril, instead the game rewards positional sense. Indeed I hardly ever make tackle, just position, position, position, but this in itself is difficult. I love the new defence game, it's hard and rewarding. To keep a clean sheet in Top Player is a true effort.

If you're having trouble with players running at you make sure you move your defence upwards towards the midfield condensing the space between the defence and midfield. And I've found this is very important, always jockey the attacker to the outside so in effect always defend on the inside. Apart from that, pray to God that you hold out for the entire game. Napoli have been by bogey team, and I think I've finally got to grips with them, but it's taken forever!

When defending, I always make sure to jockey. When Robinho's got the ball I make sure to jockey untill I get the right time to slide tackle and when I got the chance I fire that slide tackle

Although there is a difference on playing against different teams. Playing against Porto on Top Player is noticably easier than playing against Milan in top player or even proffesional.

I cannot wait till wednesday. I will be able to get my hands on both Fifa and Pes and then I will make my final decision!

I think this years is better, i love the new animations and the AI is a big improvement.

A lot of things piss me off though:
What i really hate though is the fact that the X button tackle doesnt do anything which is annoying, the fact that the computer waltzes past my defence like im not there, crap goalkeepers, and worst of all scripted gameplay. I rage when i tackle the computer about 5 times and the ball breaks to them each time then they shoot my keeper parries it straight to them. it happens every goal i concede.

Last year i stopped playing pro evo 2011 because it was too easy on Reg and Pro but Top Player it was just scripted too much. Also how hard is it to out run or take someone on?

All the comments sound so good that I probably have to get the demo in case that Konami messes something up on the final release :D

I'm an old PES fan but I stopped buying this game after PES 2008... but this year I am going back to PES 2012. Although FIFA feels and looks nice, the game is soulless... i get no satisfaction when I score. PES has always had "it" even though FIFA has been superior in the past few years. I know PES will not be perfect but I don't care... I miss the master league ;)
