( i copied and pasted this top bit from another thread i started about crossing, up until just after the picture - and what a picture!! ) All the other stuff i just wrote now and i'm not bothering to spell check, so mistakes a plenty methinks, hope it helps ya.
The secret to crossing correctly is one that many don't realise, but is a must for time after time successful outcomes.
When crossing from the outside edge of the area, look at where your incoming players are running in from. To cross to them correctly you must really (unless you are lucky) follow the code of crossing:

Please forgive the poor presentation, but where the arrows are, is where you need to direct your crosses, and you can do so by pressing the direction a split second after using the Cross button(s).. Either Circle, double circle or tripple circle + one of the chosen directions show.. IE , a quick medium height cross to the front post from the right would be: Circle+Down-right+Circle, this will play it to front post, and will be successful depending on whether someone is in that area of the box.
--Crossing basics:
-Single press = lofted, slower crosses.
-Double press = low, faster crosses.
-Triple press = fast, whipped crosses along the floor.
--(if on bottom of the screen whilst crossing)
-Circle + down = ball to front post player, or to the feet of the recipient.
-Circle + up = ball to the back post player, or a higher ball to the recipient.
-Circle + left = will attempt to play the ball to the edge of the box, or nearer to the back of the recipient.
-Circle + forward = will attempt to swing the ball towards the six yard line, or so that the recipient can run on to the ball.
-Slow down just as you're about to cross i find makes the crosses more accurate and you get a better success rate for them.
--Good ways to get a few yards of space to cross unchallenged:
-Pull off a shot fake or cross fake just as the defender comes to challenge you. Square-X or Circle-X.
-Whilst running along the line, press R2 and let go of all buttons for a second. your player will stop with the ball at his feet. Then when the defender comes into challenge you, you just simply press Left/Right and sprint and you dash off passed him, leaving him stumbling around whilst you run into alot of free space.
)-Any other tricks work fine, but i find the two above easiest and most effective.
-Pick your best players at crossing to play in areas of your formation you know plays alot of crosses.
-You can play crosses into the box from areas that aren't crossed by default just by the use of circle. If you press L1+Circle anywhere on the park, the player will attempt to play the ball into the box. Usual Single, Double and Triple tap methods apply to this aswell.
You may also want to try some of the 'crossing types' which alter the way you play specific types of crosses and by which buttons. They can be found in the Button Configuration options near the bottom of the screen. I'm using type 4 at the moment, which means i have to press L1+Circle everytime i want to use the computers automated crossing power. But means i can just use circle to play ordinary circle balls around the box. Meaning i can manually pull crosses all the way back to the edge of the box from the goal line, which without type 4 wouldn't allow me to do. Just means i have to remember to hit L1, cos if you don't you often just chip it straight out of play.
Hope that has been of some assistance. Trial and error (aka practice) is the key though.
