Need help with Positions and what they do...

Can someone confirm or correct my assumptions as to what the positions do in this game?

CF - Center Forward (Striker, guy who is on the front lines)
SS - Shadow Striker (Plays a bit behind the CF, but will be in the box as well to score and recieve crosses etc..etc..)
AMF - Attacking Midfielder (Plays in the middle behind the strikers, to feed the balls and such... good passing skills are important)
SMF - SIDE Midfielder? (Plays on the wings in the midfield area but is expected to attack as well... not expected to defend much..)
WF - Wing Forward? (Plays on the wings between mid field and goal-line... if you have this guy in the game you should not have a SMF on the same side since they do the same thing?)
DMF - Defensive Midfielder (Mid fielder that plays between center line and his CBs... good passing skills are imporant... maybe a taller guy to win headers?)
CB - Center Back - Plays in the middle of the defense... good height is nice for defending corners
SB - Side Back? (Defends the sideline in his own territory)
WB - Wing Back (Similar to Side Back but has attacking capabilities as well... like R. Carlos type?)

I think thats all of them, aside from GK, which I think I have a pretty good handle on :)

I'm wondering if I'm wrong about any of these... I'm not 100% sure on some of them.

Also tips on how to use them effectively.

I have for example 3 or 4 SMFs on my team, but I'm not sure if there's a good way to work them all on the pitch without causing problems....

Also did I miss any?

You pretty much got it correctly. WB (wing back) is missing; he would be in front of a SB and behind a SMF.
I would only use 2 SMF per game, as placing any more would create confusion. I don’t believe that WF and SMF do the same; a SMF is a more complete player if you ask me.

You are also missing the sweeper which I don’t recall how it’s abbreviated, maybe CWP, or something like that. He would be the last man in the defense in front of the keeper and right behind the center back line. He is not very used in football today but was quite popular in the beginning of the 90’s

Ah thanks for that. Yeah, I don't want to completely elminate the offside trap from my game :)

I think I have enough info now to build a solid team.

Thanks!

Oh.. also, a follow up question.

If a player i listed as a SMF, but it says he can also play AMF... does that mean he can play both positions equally well, or will he not play AMF as well as SMF?

That’s a great question, I believe he can play his first position better, but I wouldn’t hesitate to use him in his secondary position.

In the PES guide, I found little to no information about penalties for not using a player in its main position. It does say that there are some invisible limitations to the players attributes if he is positioned on an unregistered position. That not being the case of your question, but I think this information may be useful too.

Maybe if the player has a position checked he can play it and if he doesn't then he will have limitations?... it could very well be that black and white.. but who knows... only Konami :(
