I think they wanted to make the game more like a movie so they thought voice acting was the way to go...making the characters look how they do rather than that cel shaded rubbish was another good choice on their part.

FFS Nintendo, why ruin Link's image? It was bad enough on Wind Waker him saying "C'mon". And it didn't work for Bowser, giving him a voice, fucking ruined him. All the voices will be stereotypical. Link'll be all hero like, Ganon will be all "I am evil fear me!", and Zelda will be the wise woman with a voice of knowledge.
