Next Gen, New Engine.. How should Konami improve their game?

We have Seen PES09, some of us have already played PES09, hopefully it Plays like the Old versions. But Overlooking PES09 for a moment, I wanted to make this Thread to discuss things about PES in general..

What made PES so good in the PS2?? What New Features should Konami Introduce in Future versions??

In the PS2 days, PES offered the best Football experience, it was lightyears ahead of FIFA -it- had a System of Stats and Special Abilities, 4 Types of Player Movements, a great Editing Mode, etc, etc..

It was a game ahead of its time, so much that it still feels fresh Today. But The Unavoidable Questions are WHY is Konami using the same exact Systems and Engine Today?? WHY aren't they moving on and Progressing??

Maybe it's the FACT that they still aren't Familiar with Next Gen Consoles.. But still, Konami already knows they Should Introduce something New and Significant for PES 2010, the Old Engine is showing its Age.

Anyways, considering all the great Features PES had in Past versions, I wanted to ask what you guys think Konami should Elaborate on??

Personally, I think Konami is great with Stats -because- the Stats and Special Abilities are actually Relevant during Gameplay. So I think Konami should work on a Next Gen System of Stats and Special Abilities -to- add more Realism into the game.

And talking about Stats, this week I tweaked a team and made every player have all the Stats in 99, plus they also have all the Special Abilities. So the Team is Perfect in Theory.. I played 3 matches against them -and- managed a draw on the 1st one, and loosed the other two.

It was extremely Unrealistic.. although it serves as proof that the Stats DO make a Significant Difference during Gameplay (something FIFA has never done).

I had never tried that, and after I did it I've realized that Yes -Stats- do work -BUT- in Real Life a team full of Perfect Players would never work because of Obvious reasons.

So Basically, by playing against a Team in wich all the players where perfect with all the Stats on 99 and all the Special Abilities.. in this Experiment of mine, I stumbled against The Main Flaw in all Football Sims to Date.

There is No such thing as a TEAM (neither in PES or FIFA), the team with the better players usually wins.

We have Animations, Stats, Special Abilities, etc, etc.. But we do Not have "Player Tendencies" -something- to give an Identity to those players and more Importantly to the TEAM.

How Leo Messi Tends to Position (and Dribble) on the Right Flank and then cut to the Left, how Thierry Henry Tends to Run through the Left even though he is right footed, how Kaka does Not Defends, how Gattuso Tends to fight for all the balls, etc, etc..

Player Tendencies to determine How the player Plays -but- not How Well the player Plays.

I think that "Player Tendencies" are a much needed feature, we already have Types of Movements, and Stats and Special Abilities.. But we don't have enough Tactical Differences between Players.

I think New Features like "Player Tendencies" and "Tactical Stats" would add a New Dimension of Realism to an already good game. Just think about Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry having Similar "Tendencies" -and- Consequently, doing the same things in the Pitch.

This would mean that we can No longer place Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o -and- score Loads of Goals -because- these two players do Not get along, they are too Similar.

It would mean that we actually have to Think about How the players work better, about Wich players Complement each other better, etc, etc.. The best Players never make the best TEAMS, this should be a part of the game.

Something similar to this Concept could Finally "Fix" this Huge Flaw of placing great players together -and- always coming on top. It would add more Differences and Realism between Teams and Players.

I think Konami should elaborate on their Stats and Special Abilities, maybe Introduce a New Feature such as "Player Tendencies" to complement with the Stats.

Other than that, I think Konami should also work on a Next Gen System for Player Movements.. the 4 Types of Movements are too Old for Next Gen.

Instead of the 4 Types of Movements -wouldn't- it be better if Konami came up with a system that offered 5 Types of Upper Body Movements -and- 5 Types of Lower Body Movements?? This would give us 25 Variations, much better than just some 4 Types of Movements.

This are my main Thoughts on PES in General.. My apologies if some of you are bothered by the Long Post. I just wanted to share my Views on what I think Konami should be working on -and- considering that some have already Mentioned something about a "New Engine"..

Do you think Special Abilities are enough?? Do you think a New Feature such as "Player Tendencies" is needed?? What are your thoughts?

What do you guys think the New Engine will offer??

I think you are spot on with the player tendencies, although if this was to be introduced it would only be for a handful of the top players in the game.

Yeah I also thought the same at 1st.. but after thinking about it for awhile, the Average Players should also have Tendencies.

I think the Determinant Difference should be in the Stats.. for example if Leo Messi and an Average Player have the same exact "Tendencies", Messi would still be more Effective because of his Dribbling Skills.

If Konami managed to have the Stats, the Special Abilities, and something similar to Player tendencies.. I think the game would Play more Realistically than before. Wich means more Fun and more Challenge.

Anyways, I'm glad that you like the Idea..

By the way, if you haven't played against a Team in wich all the players have the Stats on 99, plus they also have all the Special Abilities. If you haven't tried that, I suggest you give it a try, it shows a lot about PES.

Great post. Couldn't agree more.

Something to help this would be when picking the team, something like FIFA - Team Chemistry. Putting certain players in combinations, such as Henry and Eto'o, could decrease the chemistry.

So much depth could be added to these games if they listened to us.

I think the tendencies idea would be awesome, it would add a whole new level of realism to the game never seen before. They even go as far as add team tendencies as well.

Some teams are more likely to play long ball, others prefer a slow build up etc. Konami should put in hard work to make teams play different styles, you must be able to see the difference when you play Chelsea compared to when you play Barcelona etc.

Morale is also another thing they could add.

Workrate as well for each player, Gatusso and Tevez will have a good stat at this, while a player like Ronaldo (brazilian) will have a poor stat.

Just by adding stats, enhance the current stats they have, add player and team tendencies Konami can make a game that feels just as good as PES5/6 but plays even more realistic and adds even more realism.

Great post by Amateur & i completely agree, the leap to the next gen systems needs a leap in the way the game plays & the tendencies which u mentioned should be the way forward.

But Addi10's comment is totally relevant i feel where player chemistry should be considered, for instance if u had a large squad but say ur main striker was someone like aguero who thrives on through balls along the deck so u could quite easily play with playmakers in the team. But if he was injured & had to replace him with a more original centre forward type like Luca Toni (just as an example) then it would maybe make more sense to drop the playmakers in order for wingers with good crossing abilities as they will be able to supply the better ammunition for the target man in the box who is good in the air as u wouldnt get the best out of him by playing through balls as he wont be as quick.
Just a small example of the team chemistry idea that i thoink could be implemented to make a good improvement to the game.
