NHL10 controls as a guide to the future of Pro-Evo

NHL10 has excellent intuitive controls that could easily be adapted for use in Pro-Evo.

The left stick is used for direction of movement as well as direction of passing/ shooting. It is pressure-sensitive and so responds to bursts of speed (more realistic than the current shoulder-button pace modifiers).

The right stick is used for shooting: up for a quick snapshot; back and up for a powerful shot; left or right through to the up position gives a 'wrist shot' but is broadly equivalent to a 'curler' in football. It would not take a huge leap to see this could be adapted to football specific commands: I.e. holding down to give a chip, or using diagonals for dummied shots/ body swerves. All of which would be massive improvements on the he shoulder buttons/ face button combinations.

Allied to the above is a stunning visuals; in-depth tactical options as well as a range of game modes, which means that the spirit and realism of Ice-Hockey (of which I know very little) is recreated brilliantly. Having the option of roughing up the opposition may be a step too far for a football title but the opportunity for shirt pulling and other 'tactical fouling' would be an accurate reflection of the modern game.

Above all it is the fluidity of NHL that is its true strength and its one that Pro-Evo always had (and FIFA never did...). I just hope that PES11can take on board some of these options as it could provide the leap forward we have been aiting for.

Funny coincidense, I was just writing about using analogue sticks for controlling players and for passing and shooting and I saw your idea of using NHL10 style controlling. I haven´t played NHL-game since NHL 98 where was by the way great chase camera. Maybe it is time to try new ice-hockey games if they have that kind of controls.
In PES series it took me years to move from d-pad to left analogue stick to moving your players. I tried it once in a while but never felt quite comfortable with it. Then one day I just decided only to use analogue stick even I struggled first matches against my friend. Now that I´m used to moving players with it I´m relly happy about the decision using only left analogue stick for it.
Little while ago I decided to use only right analogue stick for passing short passes and aerial passes(manual passing). Now that I´ve used it for passing I would like to use it also for shooting. I can feel much precise control using analogue sticks. Adding also manual shooting to right analogue stick would propably encourage people to move using it. The whole game experience would probably change from semi AI-automated to more user controlled feeling which I think is the future.

I would thoroughly recomend the demo of NHL10 in the PS Store, which is how I stumbled across this title. I have no knowledge of NHL but, on the basis of the excellent gameplay, bought the full version and haven't played anything else since! That said, I would love to apply the fluidity of the NHL controls to PES...

I see what you mean, I tried the NHL10 demo and good idea for the shots for PES like slapshots in NHL10. Though I wouldn´t use the left stick for aiming but using the right stick for it also. Cheers!
