No... I didn't tell you to do that!!!

The players not doing what you tell them to do has been a staple in PES for years. Auto slide tackling, clearing the ball when you don't want it to, shooting left when you aim right, powering the shot when you tell it to place it... I could go on.
People may say things like "In real football, the ball doesn't always go where you want it to go" etc etc. But I'm not great at football, but even when I aim left, it does go somewhere towards the left, even if it's not exactly where I want it to go.

Yesterday I was thinking about how stupid this all is, in gaming terms. The striker whacking the shot when you clearly press the R2 (or whatever it is on xbox/pc) is like the equivalent of you playing CoD, aiming a carefully placed shot at someones head, pressing the trigger... but the game goes "naaaah, I think I'll throw a grenade instead".

Then there are the instances where it clears the ball automatically, or does an auto slide, which is like if you're in stealth mode, and the game suddenly decides to let off a shotgun round.

I don't know about others, but it really annoys me. I know Konami uses these cheats as ways to limit the scorelines. Believe me, I don't want it to be really easy, with shots going exactly where I intend them to go, but at least do the general thing I'm telling you to do! Just fix the damn AI if you want it to be harder!!!

Legal Disclaimer: I hate CoD, was just using it as an example.

I don't mind the shots. It doesn't go into a random direction too often so not that big a deal. You can turn off auto sliding tackles in the formation screen->management edit->auto trigger. I played with them off for a bit but now I actually prefer having them on because of the poor player switching you usually can't switch to the right player to make a last ditch slide. I do hate the auto clearances though but it does happen a lot less often in 2011 compared to previous years.

I am not sure if this really helps or it's just a placebo effect, but you should select a player with the best teamwork stats to be your captain (taking into account the condition arrows, cos I think that affects teamwork stats as well).

Case in point: I have Vidic as team captain on my Man Utd. side in ML. He has a teamwork stats of 90. In matches where his condition arrow is at least green, I find that all aspects of the game, passing, shooting, coordinated runs...etc, was well performed. However, in matches where Vidic was in blue or purple arrow condition and I kept him as team captain, I have experienced matches where my players just go all over the place, and shooting, passing, positioning is absolutely horrific.

I don't think that this will have much to do with what I said. However I do wonder what effect teamwork actually has on a player. I know in BAL, your TW rating has an effect on your teammates, but in regular games, I dunno.... since you're the one controlling all the players.

To be fair to Konami, if I was going to make a game that has to manipulate every game as much as possible, i'd have the game have things happen the players haven't chosen/pressed to do.

I see where you're going but I don't agree. You need variables as football is so random but you don't want a game that ignores your commands.

Exactly. I DON'T want every shot to find the corner of the net perfectly, but if I tell it to place the ball, I want it bloody placed!!! If you try to place the ball in real life, your foot doesn't suddenly decide to power the ball half a mile wide and half a mile high.

I may be wrong but you may be reading into the game to deep and thats just a coincidence.
I dont think the game is as advanced for what you say to really be affecting what the OP was describing

We need less automatic interventions, one of the worst things is putting a perfect manual cross into the box, you have a player selected and your ready to challenge for the ball but the game decides to select another player and challenge for the ball on its own. Who the fuck asked for konami to play the game for us, I dont want the game to head the ball for me even if you select a player with perfect timing this still happens. I'm having a break from the game at the moment but it still pisses me off.

Yeah, that's why I said it could be a placebo effect, because I am not sure of it as well. I have however tried putting players with less teamwork stat as captain (good example is Nani) for a few matches, and the players do not behave at all.

Maybe we can test this out? Can someone else try a few matches in ML and appoint your worst teamwork stat player as captain (preferably less than 75)? Could make an interesting experiment.
