Match Reports

France 3-0 Belguim.

Goalcorers.
(France)
Henry 23, 80
Pires 41

1st Half
From the the off France where always the better team, first to everything, closing down quickly and using the wings very effectively.
Henry had some good early chances, turning the defenders but ending up with weak shots. Belguim did get a a break through though when Mpenza intercepted a Desailly pass and went through 1 on 1 with Barthez but the French keeper made a great stop to deny Belguim the lead. France eventually scored after 23 minutes. Wiltord took a throw in to Lizarazu, he turned his marker and sent in a great early ball which was met by a solid header from Henry which caught the Keeper on the wrong foot...1-0 to France. France doubled their lead after 41 minutes when Zidane 20 yard effort struck the post and Pires followed up with a simple tap in...2-0.
2nd Half
The second half was exactly the same as the first. Belguim had their chances but didn't convert and as the game wore on you could sense another France goal and on 80 minutes Henry found the net yet again. The ball came to him on the edge of the box with his back to goal he used all his skill and speed to turn both the central defenders and fire it passed the keeper into the bottom right hand corner.....3-0 and the game was over.

Ukraine 0-0 Italy

1st Half
On paper you would think Italy wouldn't have a problem beating the Ukraine...but that wasn't to be. This game was the complete opposite to France/Belguim game. Very scrappy not many chances for either team as both defences proved very tough to break. Ukraine had most chances in the first half with Rebrov troubling Buffon a few times, once hitting the post from a tight angle and the other a 1 on 1 which the Italian keeper dealt with calmly. Italy resorted to playing the long ball as the game became very boring. But they did have a good spell of passing for the ast 5.
2nd Half
Italy came out in the second half just as they finished the last 5 minutes of the first, very good football, passing it around nicely and they got Totti in for an early chance which he struck over the bar. Totti had a great header saved late on in the match as Zambrotta flew down the left wing and sent a dangerous swinging ball in which Totti connected with well, but was met with an equally good save by the keeper. It ended 0-0.

Greece 1-1 Holland

Goalscorers
(Greece)
Machlas22
(Holland)
Kluivert 84

1st Half
Suprisingly Greece had a much better start than Holland, Machlas proved a real pain for Stam and De Boer who didn't look at all settled early on. Machlas eventually found a way through as he went 1 on 1 with Van Der Sar but the big Dutchman made himself big and made a good save. Greece did score though after 22 minutes thanks to Machlas. It was almost an identical goal to that of Henry's first for France. A throw in, great turn, great cross, great header and GOAL!...1-0 to the Greeks. As the first half wore on Holland got more into the game and their best chane fell to Overmars who just missed the post from the edge of the box.
2nd Half
There where plebty of chances in the second half, some of the best falling to Machlas who went through on 2 occasions, 1 on 1 with Van Der Sar but each time the big keeper won. It looked all but over for Holland as the game drew to a close but on 84 minutes their luck would eventually arrive when a corner was cleared by Greece only to fall to Stam, who chipped it back into box, Van Nistlerooy flicked it on to Kluivert whose first touch took it away from his marker and he side footed it in off the post to equalise for Holland. inal score 1-1.

Czech 0-0 Germany

1st Half
This was a fast paced game from the start, with Germany having most of the possession. Germany where always going to in the battle in midfield, especially with a 3-6-1 formation. But that left Neuville stranded on his own and he was unable to do anything when he got the ball. There weren't many chances in the first half.
2nd Half
The second half was the same as the first, very boring. No real god chances for either team and the best chance of the second half fell to Koller whose free header fell wide of the post. Final Score 0-0.

Norway 2-1 England

Goalscorers
(Norway)
Solskjaer 38
Carew 44
(England)
Beckham 5

1st Half
England couldn't have asked for a better start when Becks scored after just 5 minutes, Heskey had found himself in loads of space on the left hand side he made a good pass to Beckham who was also in acres of space, he took a few touches and unleashed a stunning strike from outside the area into the top right hand corner. England dominated the game but disaster struck when on 38 minutes Solskjaers through ball found Carew all on his own with James charging out like a Rhino, and Carew simply slotted it passed James for the equaliser. Englands nightmare got even worse when on 44 minutes Carew turned Scholes and found Solskjaer open and all on his own, he then fired it passed James for 2-1.
2nd Half
Again England dominated the game in the second half and and their best chance fell to Owen late on who found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper only to take to long on the ball and get tackled by a defender coming back. England didn't deserve to get beat like this, but 2 little defensive errors cost them the game. Final score 2-1.

Portugal 1-0 Yugoslavia

Goalscorers
(Portugal)
Pauleta 84

1st Half
A fairly even game to start with both teams looking confident on the ball, but Yugoslavia looked the more threatening going forward. There weren't many chances in the first half and the chances the teams had where mainly free kicks that went over th bar.
2nd Half
Mijatovic wasted the best chance of the game mid-way through the second half when he went 1 on 1 with the keeper, only to chip it way over the bar. The break through finally came when a bad pass in the Yugoslavian box aloud Pauleta to intercept and cooly slot it passed the keeper. Fianl score 1-0.

Denmark 0-0 Turkey

1st Half
This half was dominated by Turkey and Sas should've had a few goals before half time only to be denied by great goalkeeping by Sorensen. Both teams struggled to get inside each other penalty area and had to resort to long range efforts. Not many chances as the first half turned into a midfild battle.
2nd Half
The second half was boring.......end of.

Sweden 0-1 Spain

Goalscorers
(Spain)
Nadal 56

1st Half
Spain played really good football early on, the midfield kept hold of the ball well and didn't let Sweden get into the game. But the best chance of the half came to Sweden. Sweden had won a corner and it was a great cross to the back post where Larsson was waiting, he made a great header from 6 yards out and Casillas made an unbelievable point blank save to deny Sweden the lead.
2nd Half
The breakthrough came on 56 minutes when Spain won a corner. Luis Enrique took it and Nadal was left with a unmissable free header which beat Hedman with ease. The game was very evenly matched and Larsson nearly equalised late on when his 20 yard effort skimmed the top of the bar. Final score 0-1.

Match Reports

Belguim 2-1 Ukraine

Goalscorers
(Belguim)
E. Mpenza 80, 86
(Ukraine)
Shevchenko 61

1st Half

From the off this was a very scrappy game, with lots of tussles in the midfield, although Belguim looked much stronger than Ukraine when coming forward. Yashkin had a great shot saved from inside the penalty area. There wehre some great chances for both teams in this half but the strikers weren't doing their job properly.
2nd half
Not much happened in the second half until on the 61st minute Rebrov found Shevchenko with a good pass in from the right, his first touch was amazing taking it passed the defender and shooting on the turn to give the Ukraine the lead. It looked all over for Belguim but Emile Mpenza had other plans, on the 80 minute mark Mpenza picked up the ball on the left with his back to goal, he turned the last defender and flew into the box unleashing an unstoppable strike into the top corner. Mpenza wasn't finished there and the great Belgian comeback was almost complete when Wilmots darted down the right hand side, he sent in a great cross which found Mpenza unmarked and he headed home from 6 yards out....2-1 to Belguim. This was easily the gam of the tournament so far. Great performance by Belguim.

Italy 0-2 France

Goalscorers
(France)
Henry 69, 76

1st Half

Italy started this game the better team but they couldn't get passed the rock solid French defence. Henry didn't have much trouble in getting passed the usually solid Italian back 3 but he had a couple of chances that he struck wide. Wiltord & Henry put on a great show on the left hand side, linking up with some great 1-2 passing moves, but couldn't produce a goal. Lizarzu hit the post late on but couldn't turn it in. All France in the first half.
2nd Half
France came out in the second half even stronger and it was inevitable that Henry was going to score. He had chance after chance but couldn't find the back of the net until the 69th minute when Pires chipped in a nice ball to Vieira who nodded it into the path of Henry who went 1 on 1 with Buffon and slotted cooly passed the keeper...1-0. It didn't take long for Henry to bag his second goal when the Italian defence couldn't clear a cross Tommassi lost the ball to Henry and he fired it in the bottom left hand corner for 2-0. Another stunning performance by the French side as the stroll to a big victory and and book a place in the Quarter Finals.

Germany 0-0 Greece

1st & 2nd Half

I'm not gonna say much about this game because there isn't really much to say about it! Germany dominated the midfield but the lone striker couldn't do much. Machlas wasn't the player he was against Holland and the final score was 0-0.

Holland 0-1 Czech

Goalscorers
(Czech)
Smicer 50

1st Half
Holland are really having a nightmare in this tournament and it clearly showed in the first half. Smicer was ever so dangerous and he was nearly gifted a goal by Van Der Sar when the keeper fumbled the ball which aloud Smicer an opening only for the big keeper to pounce on the ball. Smicer troubled Van Der Sar again late on when his had a great shot denied by the post.
2nd Half
5 minutes into the second half and the Czech's went a goal up when Smicer beat the offside trap and was met by a great ball from Nedved, he cooly took it passed Van Der Sar and slotted it for 1-0. Hollands luck just wasn't with them in this game. After the Czech's scored Holland began to play some great football. Kluivert narrowly missed with a overhead kick late on but it wasn't to be as the Czech's managed to hang on to their 1-0 lead and take all 3 points.

Yugoslavia 2-1 Norway

Goalscorers
(Norway)
PEN Carew 40
(Yugoslavia)
Mijatovic 45, 75

1st Half
A great match which was dominated by Yugoslavia. They had plenty of chances but didn't take them. The break through came on the 40th minute when Solskjaer was tripped in the area and Norway won a penalty. Carew stepped up and banged it in the top corner...0-1. Yugoslavia got a well deserved equaliser in injury time when Mijatovic received a good ball from the left, he turned and sent in a great shot to the bottom corner...1-1.
2nd Half
Yugoslavia came out in the second half and played extremely well, but only created half chances. It took until the 75th minutes for Yugoslavia to score their second which incidently becmae the winner. Mijatovic beat 2 defenders and fired a right footed shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 and the win.

England 2-1 Portugal

Goalscorers
(Portugal)
Figo 11
(England)
Beckham 75
Owen 81

1st Half

A positive start by England was met by disaster when on the 11th minutes Portugal won a free kick about 20 yards out. Figo struck it beautifully and it curled over the wall and way out James' reach to give the host nation the lead. After that goal Portugal didn't do anything all game. Owen had to level after 30 minutes but struck wide. England where always on top but couldn't break down the Portugese defence.
2nd Half
Mid-way through the second half came almost the greatest goal of the tournament when Steven Gerrard pick up the ball at the halfway line, darted forward with it and cracked an amazing shot from 30 yards out which beat the keeper but hit the underside of the bar and bounced out! Time was running out but on the 75th minute the great England comeback had started, Heskey laid the ball to Beckham who had a big space to run into, he had options either side of him but decided to go it alone, he had a crack from the edge of the box which smashed against the post and flew over the the other side of the net to make it 1-1! England didn't want to stop there and on the 81st minute came the goal they deserved so much. Heskey used all his strength to get passed to defenders and chip it into the box where Beckham flicked it on to Owen, he brought it down with a defender closing in on him and struck a outside foot shot which Ricardo saved well, the ball looked like it was going out for a corner but Owen didn't give up he ran to the ball and hit a first time left footed shot from the tightest of angles which somehow went under Ricardo's body and rolled in to give England a 2-1 lead and the win!

Spain 0-1 Denamrk

Goalscorers
(Denmark)
Sand 55

1st

Spain had a good start, had good chances but didn't take them. Both the Spain and the Denamrk defenders where playing unbelievably well. The first half ened 0-0 with not many chances being created by either side.
2nd Half
The break through came 10 minutes into the second half when Rommedahl beat Mendita and set Sand to rifle in a great shot into the bottom left hand corner which beat Canizares with ease. After the goal it was end to end stuff with Morientes and Tomasson both having the best chances to score. Morientes put it wide from 6 yards after 61 minutes and Tomasson beat Canizares 1 on 1 but not the post. It ended 1-0 to Denmark.

Turkey 2-1 Sweden

Goalscorers
(Sweden)
Alexandersson 21
(Turkey)
Hakan Sukur 44
Sas 52

1st Half
Sweden come forward strong and score after 21 mintes. Alexandersson made a great overlap down the right hand side and Ibrahimovic picked him out with a great pass, he struck an early shot which beat the fully stretche Rustu. Rustu rushed out to collect the ball on 34 minutes but fumbled, as he struggled to get back Larsson shot but missed an open goal sending the ball over the bar. Turkey equalised after 44 minutes when Sas played in Sukur and he slotted it passed the keeper for 1-1.
2nd Half
52 minutes and Turkey took the lead, this time Sukur set Sas up with a nice through ball, he then struck a great shot passed 2 defenders and in off the post from just inside the area. Turkey played great football from there on. Larsson & Ljunberg link up well on the left but couldn't score. Alexandersson nearly scored late on but his shot went wide. Final score 2-1.
