Can anybody give me any pointers.....I'm still pretty new to the game but have almost mastered the basics. I'm losing 4-2, 2-1, so scoring isnt my problem, just defending.

What I'm finding however is that my play is too gung-ho and i get caught out at the back by either long-balls where the oppostion are thro' on goal or left 1-1 at he back......what am i doing wrong...how do i ensure my players stay at the back, whilst still being able to attack.......

I know you can edit individually but when we play, none of the others do, so it seems i must be playing wrong...

ps. how do i play the long ball, and where from on the pitch

first of all what level are you playing on if higher than 3* go down to 2* or 1*, or u could set all of your defenders manually by putting their arrows pointing backwards.

P.S
Hold L1 & press O for an accurate high ball or press L1 & triangle for a high through ball

You can also give a long ball manually, by using the analog sticks. Press the left analog stick, and then move the right analog stick to he position you want. The further you move him, the further the ball goes, and the more power it gets

i use fast strikers, press :square: to hoof it - then let em run run run

:p

edit players manually and set the arrows pointing backwards like said previously - does the trick

and never forget the keeper is another defender, bring him out manually when needed

the point was that nobody else edits there teams when we play other than chnage players etc, we just pick two teams at random, yet no matter who i get i over commit...

Thanks for the long pass controls though. Where is this move best played from. Deep in defense or midfield?

Depends what one youre talking about:

:L1: & :circle: for an accurate high ball = from defence

:L1: & :triangle: for a high through ball = defensive midfield at least - dont use this from defence it wont go far enough and you'll probably lose it

:square: to hoof it = as far back as you like, this ones going long

Seems to me its just the way you play then
Check if there are any icons next to where the player name is when you're playing - you might be mashing l2 and a button by accident, activating a strategy, like counter attack for example. And then that would be your problem :p

All I can say is PASS, PASS< PASS!!!! It's my problem too, as soon as my midfield get it I run it and then lose it. The only way to play conservatively is to pass, even if it means going backwards

everyone always says that, but i never need to

maybe im just good at dribbling and crap at passing but i find the direct route nice and easy :D

peg it down the wing using r2 / double tapping forward to push the ball ahead of you and you're away

dont worry about him lfc

he likes to follow me and comment sometimes so i just try to ignore him

maybe he's in denial

:p :p :p

sort of back on topic:
yesterday on pes3 i sent a looooong ball downfield with :square: to owen who let it drop over his head and cracked it on the half volley....but hit the side netting :(
It was so cool you could see the whole move from the beginning it was that fast. Keeper to henchoz who smacks it and then the owen bit.
Was just great - wish it'd gone in :(

For all your players, in formation mode you can edit their Attacking and Defensive arrows to determine what kind of runs they make. Set the defensive arrows on high for your defenders and maybe give them attacking arrows so they run towards your own goal.

A decent formation for defending would be 4 at the back with 2 DMFS. The one I use is diamond 4-4-2 with 1 DMF (Vieira) but it has to be someone who is inclined to want to help your defenders.

What camera do you use. Default Long and Wide will give you a good view of the attackers so you should be able to close them down sooner. Keep an eye on the radar. When defending, don't hold :x: and :square: all the time as it draws players out of their positions. Don't pass too much when the ball is in your area/half as it could get intercepted.

The best form of defence is attack :)

If your defenders are over-commiting, make sure you don't hold L1 when your passing out of defence...it will make them run on ahead of the midfielder that's receiving the pass. If you lose possession in those circumstances the opposition will likely be 1-on-1 against the keeper, with all the space in the world.

You could try Quick Settings to set the Team Strategy to Counter Attack, but it's a bit of a heavy handed way of managing the team. (It seems to set all DF's to High defensive awareness, and Teams Attack/Defence level to auto-defencive.)

Under Formation, look at the List Team Settings option. It'll show you:

the Attack/Defence Level of the side (you want to avoid auto-attack unless your chasing a goal late in a game);

The Defence System, Normal, Line or Sweeper. The Sweeper option should keep one DF covering while the other mark attackers. (I think you can play Sweeper properly without a CBW?);

and the degree of emphasis on certain tactics like the Back Line, pressing the ball, offside and Counter Attacking.

Make sure your not pushing the team's Attack/Defence level too far up (Red) by hitting L2 and R1, keep it around Green to Yellow if your defending a lead late on.

Maybe set your defenders to man-mark the strikers individually?

Or set a DMF's Attack arrows to give cover to the defence by having him cover the width of the pitch in front of them. And put his Mark Settings to CV - covering, so he doesn't wander out position.

It may be worth working on a formation, stocking it, and then fitting other teams into that. Then use Formation -> Automatic Sort -> Change team to suit formation (y/n?) -> Change starting line-up as well (y/n). Double check the selections that the COM makes for players in poor form (blue arrows) who you might want to replace, and scan the subs for anyone who's on top form (red arrows).

At least then you can apply a consitant team shape/strategy to most clubs, and get on with with playing. Better still have a a range that you are comfortable with (a 3-5-2 ,and a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3). Then you can change the shape of a side depending on where the strength's of your squad are, and who's in form. (e.g if yu haven't got 3 decent CBT's playing well, or maybe the SMF players are weak, look to see if you have 2 good SB's)

The Line Defence tactic IS A MUST. No defender over-commits and if one gets skinned there is always cover. You can easily get away with using three defenders. I've gone 12 5* ML games in a row with my created Aberdeen team without conceding. WOO-HOO!
