Patching other PS2 Games

When you insert a PS2 game into the DVD drive or whatever all that comes up is a list of data files that are un-openable. To edit the game (e.g make a patch) I assume you need to somehow get into these files and overwrite them with other files (kits etc) By the way I don't mean PES3 in this case, I'm talking about other PS2 games. ( as I know there is guides to patching the PES3 data)

What I would like to do is know how to open the files and get around them. if anyone can help please do. Sorry if this is located somewhere else on the forum, but I did search and couldn't find anything on it.

Thanks in advance...

As far as I am aware the PES series is the most patched game, most other games are just ripped rather than patched, if u are just looking to rip games then there's loads of ps2 forums out there that will help.

So other games can't be patched, is this what you're saying? Because a new Rugby gme is comin out that doesn't have licenses, it's like PES3 but in rugby, I don't want a patch, i just want to know what is required to explore the files of a PS2 game so that in future maybe I can patch it...
