Got my copy of PES 2010 last week and have given it a good going over. I didn't like the gameplay much at first but decided to give it a few seasons to see if I grow into it.
My own opinion is that there hasn't been a good football game since PES4, so my expectations for this years release were nice and low. And I havn't been dissapointed.
Most reviewers when review PES 2010 would go on about sound and graphics (though I will touch on these later). But the only thing that really matters in a Pro Evo is the Master League and the gameplay.
Firstly: Master League.
In a word: brilliant!
Propper money! A real challenge to build a club! Relegation scraps! This years version is by far and away the best of the series.
Secondly: Gameplay.
In a word: ****
The gameplay is PES 2010 is nothing short of an abomination which has obviously been coded by a troop of halfwit apes in a jungle clearing.
A few slight niggles:
1. Fouls: the AI simply runs into your player and bashes him off the ball. I have played almost four seasons now and have not had a single penalty, where there were several obvious and clear fouls. To call a game a simulation and then have the AI simply smash the players team all over the pitch (often from behind) with no punishment is simply lazy. Another irritation is when about 6 or 7 players will quickly bunch up one your player like a rugby scrum - its like schools football, and looks very messy.
2. Players: I agree with the sentiment that just being able to dribble your way through defences makes a poor and limited game. However, since when did ANYONE have the pace to match Lennon or Walcott? PES has simply reverted to an old trick of removing pace as a weapon in the game (PES5) - we don't have the time or the ability to program a propper AI, so we will make sure the user can do bugger all to score more than a goal a game.
The sheer lack of intuition: maneuvering even the spritliest and most athletic players in PES 2010 is like helming an oil tanker through lard. You would get more response from a big pile of horse sh*t.
Input delay (or good as):
When I press shoot, SHOOT. Don't take it on your chest, run two or three yards and then get bashed by an AI player and fall over.
You can press a button, go to work, come home, and be back just in time to see what happens. Shocking.
A personal irritation:
Stadiums: Not many are there? When you consider the vast numbers on FIFA games of late. Very poor. For a 'next gen' game, this doesn't cut it at all I'm afraid
Final verdict: PES 2010 = beer coaster
In my opinion a once brilliant game series is now as good as finished. I for one won't be buying another PES. A shame really, PES4 was a classic. PES5 was defencive and dull. PES 6 was too easy, PES 2008 was a mess, PES 2009 was also a mess. PES 2010 was the final nail in the coffin.
RIP
Konami shall join the blacklist of sh*tness along with Ubisoft and EA that wont be getting £20 out of me again.
Thankyou and goodnight
