Having spent the evening playing a few games of the demo, I thought I’d offer up my initial thoughts on the game.
I’d like to begin by stating that I’m going to stick to talking about what’s in the game, rather than what isn’t.
I will also finally cover aspects I hope to see improved when we get the final demo later.
I played on the PS3 demo version.
I’ll start by summarising key positive/negative points, and then go into detail about them.
Positives:
There’s a larger set of animations on view
Player control response is very very good
Player recovery time after impact with opposition players is much improved, and means one less source of frustration!
Passing will take some time to get used to
Penalties are fixed
Defending will have to be practiced a lot
Dribbling and skills feel natural and effective
Player selection during set plays is great
Negatives:
Ball physics seem strange to me
Shooting doesn’t feel right
Passing has way too much assistance and paths seem fixed when trying to pass the ball around
Still getting away with off the ball fouls
I couldn’t loft the ball as a shot type
Impressions
Something that struck me straight away was that you have to initiate the kick off. But there was no 5 second counter, as with free kicks within which to take the kick off, once the referee has whistled. Which means you’re at the mercy of the team taking the kick off.
I’m hoping that this won’t be an issue in online games where you could potentially get cretins winding you up incredibly by just not taking the kick off.
With passing assistance switched off, the ball felt slower and heavier when passing. Also with general passing, regardless of assistance level, I’m not sure how much of a difference the passing guage made. If I tapped the button it still made it to the intended team mate easily enough. Equally having the guage on full power made it to the players with no perceptible difference in power or speed. Perhaps I need to analyse it more, but this is initial impressions.
Once on the ball, I was very impressed with the speed with which my players move. It makes PES2011 players feel like they’re running in treacle.
Dare I say it – it felt very PES6 like! Skill moves were pulled off with ease (just using R2 – I haven’t attempted to configure any custom skills for R1).
I felt more in control of the player on the ball, and could believe in their ability to hold on to the ball and get out of tight situations.
Too often in PES2011, I find myself getting rid of the ball when getting closed down, due to not being sure whether I could manoeuvre passed an approaching opponent.
To elaborate on passing a little more, there were some instances where players dumbly watched the ball go passed their feet for someone else in my team to go and get. Perhaps I need to play with the player switching options to make sure I can select players easier. Some passes slipped passed opposition players a bit too easily as well. Especially if there was some sort of ricochet, then it felt like players were wrong footed, but to the extent that they couldn’t adjust to the new ball path, and so were unnecessarily vulnerable. But these occurrences were not so frequent to be alarming.
With regards to shooting, something I noticed was that players taking shots didn’t feel the pressure of defenders closing them down when shooting.
In PES2011, the best way to put off an attacker that is in a good position and about to shoot is to get as close to them as possible, and they will either skew their shot, or have reduced shot power. I found often in the demo that players could be dribbling with opponents in close proximity, and they’d still get off powerful shots. This means you’re going to have to be on your guard a lot more often, and is a feature I definitely applaud.
But overall the shooting doesn’t feel effective for me. I don’t see much change in pace and power when shooting either.
Player movement wasn’t a feature I could get to grips with properly. Having watched various videos that Konami released showing some excellent player movement off the ball, I can’t say I witnessed much of it myself. I don’t recall any diagonal runs, or movement of players near the player about to receive the ball. Perhaps I was too busy taking everything in, but it didn’t hit me in the face as I expected.
Goalkeepers seem to parry a lot of shots back out into open play. I didn’t get too much goal mouth action in my session to be fair, since I was concentrating on build up play primarily. I didn’t however witness any real clangers.
I have to say I am very very happy to finally see the goalkeepers able to play out a ball to any player on the pitch! Being able to use the right stick to highlight the intended recipient almost brought tears to my eyes! I’ve only been crying out for this simple but effective feature for years! Goalkeepers seem to take too long when putting the ball down on the ground, once they have the ball in their hands for my liking.
I still don’t get a sense of urgency from goalkeepers to initiate counter-attacks, or to find team-mates quickly. I hope this dynamic will be tightened up.
I didn’t get to test the referees as much as I’d have liked, and offside decisions also, so will look to do that tonight.
Overall, I have to say it’s a bold move by Konami to release the demo with the game not representative of final gameplay.
I totally applaud their decision to do so, since for me it shows confidence in their game.
I would like to ask people to not start making any final judgements on the game, and to use this opportunity to bring out as many issues as you can find, and let’s get them to Konami. I’m sure they already know a fair few issues to be sorted, but could easily miss some.
If you find any new bugs similar to the jog bug, or a sure fire way to waltz through to a scoring position which is a fault, then do let us know!
